Dear Jim Thanks for your reply. I gave the Family Search a try but no luck even with just the surname! I will see if a search of the PRO marriage records for the period turns up a result, or possibly the local F/History Society. Thanks again & regards. Can I add to this with my own correction! Copies of the two sets of MIs are held by the S&DFHS although not actually for sale. The Service Provider will search the two sets for specific names - again details on the Society Web Site. 7. THOMAS HARDY connection? [0.978646]
I became interested in genealogy in the 1970s after an aged uncle mentioned, whilst looking through some old family photos of mine, that his mother had some letters, usually giving unwanted advice, and a photo from "that writer chap". "I think he became quite famous, can't remember his name, but he lived in Dorset" he said. "Not Thomas Hardy!" I exclaimed. "That's the chap" he replied. That triggered memories of a pale blue photo album I was given as a child to keep me amused when visiting my grandparen
8. Re: Thomas Jukes 1851 Lookup Required [0.978646]
Thanks to all who helped me with this. I've drawn a blank but even that is useful. I know he wasn't in Hampshire in 1851 so perhaps Wiltshire is the next port of call. I think he may have been in Dorset (at Caundle Marsh) in 1871 but it's all speculation as he may have died many years before 1851. Thanks again, I'll have to keep looking, Tim Robinson tim@tigerent.freeserve.co.uk
9. RE: BandB Fifehead Magdalen [0.978646]
Larry, I cannot speak from personal experience but you can try the following http://uk8.multimap.com/map/places.cgi for information. Just type in Fifehead Magdalen, it will show a map of the area, follow the "Local Web Sites" link and select Hotels (it return 42 when I tried this today). Manor Farm is listed, it's even got fishing rights. By the way which families are you researching in the area, mine may link. Dear Maddy The URL for the Commonwealth War Graves site is http://www.cwgc.org Regarding the question about the soldier from the Canadian Expeditionary Force being in the Dorset Yeomanry, my knowledge is quite limited. However I was just looking at http://www.archives.ca yesterday. There you will find a listing of all those who enlisted in the CEF. Somewhere on the forms they had to swear that they would join whatever regiment they were assigned to. There is lots of information about the CEF. Have a

Trying to contact Judy Ramsey of New Zealand. She posted the name SWAFFIELD on the Dorset surnames interest list but my email to her was bounced. Her query was about a possible illegitimate birth in Netherbury and family lore about the father being a John SWAFFIELD. Damon This may prove more nuisance than help but I have found that new names often provide new links. I have two Smiths marrying into my lines. George = Ann Dorey 6th May 1798. Witnesses James Hood and Lucy Bennett. Ann was from East Holme but I wouldn't let that worry you; I have another of my East Holme ancestors marrying into a Bushey family. Sarah Smith b. 21. What is an 'Admon' [0.978646]
Hello everyone. I was recently reading a published article about my family tree and one part of the article made reference to the one of the individuals (died 1733) in either Wiltshire or Dorset (it said, I just can't remember off the top of my head which) and said that "in the Admon, ..." and then when on to state some of the info from obtained from the 'Admon'. Obviously from the text stated, I conclude that the "Admon" is a form for source document, but can anyone tell me what kind of document? If it

I joined the Dorset list in September of 1999 and have contributed and received help and direction from others, but still have not accomplished my objective, which is, to confirm definitively, that my ancestor came from Dorsetshire. Details of my objective and results to date, since joining the Dorset list, are as follows: I'm trying to confirm recent LDS information that states William Thrall 1579 born in Slope Hills Netherbury, Dorsetshire and his son William Thrall born in 1605. 23. Lydlinch [0.978646]
I'm afraid this message may be a little late for those of you overseas, the technical problems prevented me sending it earlier. Will be off to the LDS in just over 12 hours. I shall be looking at the LDS film of the Lydlinch Settlement Papers on Friday. They date from 1733. If there is anyone with ancestors that appear to have moved into Lydlinch between 1733 to 1800, I would be happy to look out for your name, but please let me know when you think they moved into the parish. 24. Thomas JUKES 1851 Lookup Required. [0.978646]
Dear All, Has the 1851 census for Dorset been indexed? I'm searching for an entry for Thomas JUKES who was described as being 'Late of Caundle Marsh, Dorset' in a will of 1878 and in the marriage entry for one of his sons in 1871 he is described as 'Father: Thomas JUKES - Gentleman'. I'm hoping from this that he was alive during census years and can find his place of birth. He was married to Grace DARK in 1813 and had been a blacksmith. If the 1851 census is indexed would someone have a moment to lo
