1. Re: [D-Col] True Ref. Dutch Churches? [1]
Hi Bruce ----- The History of Rockland County New York by Rev.David Cole ,D.D. 1884 says The Reformed Church of Kakiat , or West New Hempstead (" Brick Church"), organized December 4 th 1774 ------ in the summer of 1824 , Dominie James D Demarest and 68 of the members seceded from the brich church and formed the True Reformed Church of Monsey .. If the records transcribed by Carol Miles start about 1774 , then it or they are the records of the " Brick Church " " True " may have b
2. Re: [D-Col] True Ref. Dutch Churches? [1]
Hi Leslie, I have never seen the work attributed to Carol Miles [1996] thus do not know when the records start. But I do know that supposedly her work contains the baptism records of some of my ancestor's [Isaac Myers and Martha Youry/Yeury] children starting in 1828, 4 years after Rev. Demarest departed for Monsey. So I doubt that these records pertain to the "Brick" church. My concern is for how many churches existed around that time to which the term "True" was attached to the name. And was there not
3. Re: [D-Col] Quick records from Naarden [1]
Thanks, Lucy--just got access to a better copy, and what you posted is correct, according to what I see now. Also, for what it's worth, I notice there's a colon in the marriage record, after the word "jong". 4. Re: [D-Col] Anthony Paxton & Annetje Kip [1]
Dear Joann, In William Nelson's "New Jersey Marriage Records, 1665-1800", originally published in 1900, we learn that a marriage license was issued to "Anthony Paxton, Essex County, and Antje Kip, Essex County, on 25 July 1761." I found the baptisms of 4 of Anthony and Antje's children baptized in the Acquackanonk Dutch Church in Passaic, New Jersey (as transcribed and indexed by Arthur C.M. Kelly and published by him in 1992). I have included the baptismal date, the name of the child, and the witnesses'
5. Re: [D-Col] Reinventing the wheel re KALDER [1]
J. Kelsey, Helmar Jans Kalder and Helmig Jans Joralemon are 2 entirely different fellows. Note the marriage record in the Albany RDC of "Helmig" Jeralimans vs. the Albany records of "Helmar" Jans Kalder. By the Albany records, I would guess that the 2 are at least 25 to 30 years apart in age. Helmig's wife was Anneke Lucasz (Hooghkerke), dau of Lucas Van Hooghkerke while the wife of Helmar Jans Kalder (if there was one) is at the moment, unknown. 6. [D-Col] Margaret POLEMUS ? w/o Guiliame Guiliamse [1]
Working with Regina Haring, Arlene Goff and Jim Sauchyn I located the correct Maragrietje/Margrietje Polhemius last night, but didn't know of, or find, her marriage. Arlene Goff independently figured out the entire explanation, as she knew of the marriage of "William Gillemse CORNELL" to this Maragrietje, being Maragrietje's "ninth great-grand niece". The Cornell puzzled me for a moment, but then I recalled that the father of Guillaume Guilluames was said to have been "Guilliam CORNELIS". Having thought a

10. [D-Col] My error! [1]
Dear Cynthia, When citing to Kip book I chose Isaac's baptismal date from the wrong line and gave that of his older brother Anthony in error. The Isaac I believe to be the grandfather of the Annetje Kip who married Anthony Paxton was actually baptized in the NY Dutch Church on 1 Oct 1693. His parents were, indeed, Isaac Kip and Sara de Mill. Isaac Kip, Jr., married "Hanna van Noortstrant" in the NY Dutch Church on 13 May 1716. Thanks for putting the record straight! 12. [D-Col] Re: Grace (Cerant) Beasly Williams [1]
Dear Dorothy - Thank you so much for your help. I agree that either the minister made a slip, or there was some fairly similar name that he recorded as Heering. I recall that a while back you helped me with a question about someone named Harren, #242 in the Tappan baptisms, after which somebody (Cole?) had written in parentheses (Haring). With a marvelous bit of sleuthing you established that this was a German family with no relation to the early Dutch Harings. I note that even when baptizing Grace Cer

17. [D-Col] Elizabeth Van Wagenens [1]
I have 2 Elizabeth Van Wagenens. One is supposed to be the daughter of Aart Jacobs and Annetje Gerrits VanWagenen and married Cornelis Masten. The other is supposed to be the daughter of Hendrick Aertsen and Asltje Claes Van Wagenen and married to Johannes Ter Bosch. Can anyone tell me what the relationship is and any dates for these Elizabeths would be very helpful. Margot
18. [D-Col] True Reformed Church [1]
A little more information can be obtained on the True Reformed Church from a book by Rev. Dr. David Demarest, past president of the Reformed Dutch Protestant Church, pastor at various churches in New York and seminary professor at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. See Pages 119 and 120. Dr. Demarest's book is thin but very informative. Printed in 1846 it is difficult to find. I am fortunate to have a copy left to me by my grandfather. A sidenote, Dr. Demarest's son, William Henry David Steele Demare
19. Re: [D-Col] Grace CERANT, HEERING, GILJON, BESELIE, WILLIAMS [1]
Hi Howard, Jan Beselie and Grace having been socially challenged and the socially prominent Kierstede/Kips mercifully having come to the rescue is certainly one possibility. I also found that Samuel Kip married Annetje Herring, (daughter of Elbert Herring b. 1705 bpt. Tappan) and Elizabeth Bogaert, Elbert Herring was son of Pieter Jansen and Grietje Bogaert. Elbert also married Catherine Lent who apparently died in 1731. 14 December 1726 NY DRC 1726 14 Dec; Elbert *Herring; Catharina Lent, tot Haarlem.

This is just the greatest list. You always promptly come up with answers. Thanks Cynthia & Dorothy for information on the Elizabeths. I think I have them straight now. As for the Jan Jochemse question ; this is what I have from " New Netherland Families -- Vanderhoef - The First Five Generations" by Wilson V. 21. Re: [D-Col] Reinventing the wheel re KALDER [1]
If Jan Jochemsen Kalder and his wife Marritie (married second Gysbert Bogaert) had a son Helmer, then do the following records all refer to the same person or was there more than one Helmer Janse? The first record I find of a Helmer Janse is Albany Court records of 14 Nov 1685, Gysbert Marcelis, plaintiff, against Helmer Janse, defendant. The plaintiff demanded of the defendant, 42 gl. in beavers for a gun and one pair of shoes. The honorable court condemned the defendant to pay the plaintiff the sum of 42

24. [D-Col] Hollen Research [1]
We have a line of our family that has been a brick wall for some time. We are working on the name HOLLEN. We recently found a family history that was written in 1946. It stated that the Hollens were Dutch and were in the Hudson River valley in 1686. I have found Hollenbeck and Hollenbeek but not Hollen. I think the name may have been shortened but others say that this surname existed in the Netherlands. The frist real records for the family turn up in Maryland in the 1770s. I am new to this list and
25. RE: [D-Col] Rufugees of Schoonechtede? [1]
That would have been the Schenectady Massacre of February 1690. Robert Livingston wrote: This sad story should not pass from our memory but remain engraved on it and we should grieve over our sins rather than bewail our loss, for it is clearly shown that when the measure of our iniquities is full, we are cut down and almost exterminated, of which the present smoking ruins of houses and barns bear ample witness before the eyes of our few remaining people. As to the causes of this bloody war, which they pre
