It takes some getting used to, but you can bring up Manifests that do NOT show up on the Ellis Island site. You can look by Name, date, ship etc.
There is also a list of those Manifests (rolls) that are missing.

Hi Josh,
I know whatu mean about people disappearing. Maybe you could try New York
State, New Jersey or the New England States. Where do u live? I live in
Va. and my family settle in upstate New Yrok near Rochester. They may have
died after 1920.
Anyway good luck.

Hello:
I am new to this list and I am trying to find my SEITZMAN ancestors who passed through Ellis Island from 1899-1905. I found my g-g-grandfather, Aron Leib Zeitzmann and his two brothers, but I am not able to find his children and his wife. The 1910 and 1920 censuses said that they passed through Ellis Island in 1904, but I have not been able to find a trace of them. Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Very few departure lists have survived. In addition your person could have
left from any port. Rotterdam/Antwerpen/LeHavre.... But also the south side
of France or even Italy.
In 1870 he would have arrived at Castle Garden. If you are sure about the
year you can find the films at either the NARA or at a local FHC.

Hello,
I am really new to ellis island and would like to know if there is anyone who
might answer a couple of question.
First if a migration from Switzerland to the California Coast line took place
in 1870 would they have first arrived in Ellis Island?
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the Ships Manefest a filled out on
departure or arrival?
Are immagration and naturalization papers from 1910 completed soon after
arrival?

Oops , the 1901 census is only for your 1870 arrival times of course. For
1910 you might try 1910-1905 or 1920 census.

Airazell,
I wish that I had enough experience to be able to help you, but I'm just
like you, in a quest of tracing back my ancestors.
Have you tried Ancestry.com yet? It is a website that carries millions of
names that really go back far. You can register as a guest, but are
limited as to where they will let you go in the website, or they charge,
I think $69.95 for a years membership. In that case I think you are
unlimited as to where and what you can do at their website. I'm sure
you'll be ablke to ask q
