Hi,
I heard somewhere a long time back that PICKUP was a Romany / Gypsy
surname -how true that is I don't know but if you did a search on Google and
such I'm sure you would find a society dedicated to Gypsy ancestors -is
there a rootsweb list for it even?

I am seeking information on Chambers and Scott. Sarah chambers born in
Milnthorpe about 1839. Her parents were Thomas chambers a painter who
married Hannah Shaw, Kendal area. Sarah was married to Alexander Scott a
malster, in 1860 in Toxteth Park Parish of Walton on the Hill. Alexander's
father Alexander was a farmer. I am seeking a connection to find
Alexander's family as well as the family of Thomas and Hannah. Appreciate
any help if only to point me in a direction. Thanks Patricia Kenner,

Hello Michelle
Can you maybe elaborate on an area for your names and a time period?
ELLIS is a good old Border reiver name isn't it?
And somewhere I have heard of the MILLRAY's but can't think how or where!
Typically of my ever failing memory.
A Happy and peaceful Christmas to you.

Yes Marion,
I've got a brick wall I need help with I need 2 look ups. I need a place
born and a father's name.
I need an 1861 census search for -
William GEORGE born abt 1800 in Gloucestershire - he was in the 1851
census at Cowan Head, in the township of Strickland Roger. The enumerator
has written Ullis for the place name. I've been on Gloucestershire list
thinking it might be Uley but there's apparently no Parish church baptism so
his family may have been non-conformist.. I need the place name.
He was
Would someone on this mailing list please help me to find the parents of
John MARR born ca 1803 Lanercost
At least Lanercost was what he gave as his birthplace in the 1881
Census. I obtained the fiche giving births there, but it contained no
MARR's at all. Is Lanercost in the Cumbria area or should I be looking
in Cumberland? Are there many MARR families in Cumbria. He was a
tailor by trade when he moved to and married in the Newcastle area.
I really would appreciate any hints about alternat
Hi gang
Over on the other Cumberland list - CUL - Sarah is having a Christmas party
on the 19th. She has said that anyone from this list is very welcome to
attend :-)
Some of you of course will know what I am talking about as I know you are
also subbed to CUL but for those that don't have a clue about this - here
goes:
The party is a virtual one and happens online. Party goers are virtually
calling in at the houses of those who join in for a bit of carol singing and
wassailing etc..The whole flavour of th
If you can knock down any of my brick walls I will love you forever(starting
right after the Christmas silly season passes!)
I am researching MILLRAY,CRASTON,PARKINSON, PICKUP, ELLIS
Happy Christmas to you and yours.

Hi cup! I think you have started partying early!
Aw, you've let the cat out of the bag ;-)
Marion
I didn't know ELLIS was a Border Reiver name, I have so little to go on,
with this family, I really only have a mar cert. One day I will get stuck in
and persevere until I hit paydirt.
The MILLRAY,CRASTON,PARKINSON lines have been found in Kirkby Stephen,
Windermere, Kendal, East Ward,Cockermouth, Watermillock, plus.
I have traced them back to 1804 with Henry MILLRAY b Paterdale, before that
I know not where they came from.
The PICKUP name was in Castleton Moor,LAN, in1864 for her marriage to George
ELLIS.
Well good luck with the moving!
I have seen Wreay/Reay/Wrea spelt as "Ray" over here too - in fact I used to
work with a Mrs Ray.
Happy hunting,
Marion

Hello Lynn
Have your tried asking this on the WES group? This is their area :-)
Did I give out the WES address yesterday? I can't remember so here it is
anyway:
ENG-WESTMORLAND-L -request@rootsweb.com
Ullis - a form of shorthand for Ullswater? Ulvertson?
I dunno really but hope you get some luck soon :-)

WRAY figures in my family history my John Wray was born in Spofforth parish
in WRY in abt 1810.
There's a one-name study for METCALF and variants contact www.one-name.org

Morning Michelle
Have you tried posting your name interests for Kirkby Stephen, Windermere
and Kendal on the WES list as these places were in the former county of
Westmorland?
The subbing address is:
ENG-WESTMORLAND-L-request@rootsweb.com
It's a very helpful list!
For Border Revier info:
http://www.reivers.com/
That MILLRAY name is still bugging me - I have heard something about them
somewhere but for now I'll have to leave it - I have dogs to walk and a
dentist to see!
Best of luck,
Marion

Gosh - there is a deadly silence from this list! Is there anybody out there?
Has no one any brick walls that they want to talk about? Maybe some of us
could help - well that is supposing there is more than just me on here! LOL

Marion

Dear list,
Could SKS check a marriage for me? I have found a listing on the
FreeBMD for a Jane HOLME, marriage during the second quarter of 1839 in
Ulverston District. I believe that she married a Thomas PRESTON, but I can
not prove this by the FreeBMD. Could someone with access to maybe the BVRI2
check on this for me, if it is even listed? I would appreciate it.
I am also interested in finding any info regarding the PRESTON surname from
the Dalton-in-Furness and Ireleth areas. I have several
Hi,
I'm trying to find out about a HARDY family who lived in Cartmel around
1790. I know Hannah HARDY was born in Cark, Cartmel approx 1787, she married
William LITTLE in Cartmel in 1811.
I would be grateful if someone with access to the Cartmel Parish Registers
could try to find Hannah's baptism or any other Hardy's who were baptised at
that time.
Thanks in anticipation.
Paul.
Hello
I am researching all variations of LEWTAS LATUS LATEWISE etc and wonder if
LEWTETH, found in early Millom registers, is a variation. Has anyone any
information about this name or any others similar?
Best wishes
