1. Interesting burials & Didmarton [1]
Hi Richard You are absolutely correct on this one. I have it on microfiche and noticed that it starts "1830 May ye 30th. William TEAGLE his Book Didmarton". I hadn't realised that it was an unofficial record though. We owe his a great debt for including all these fascinating snippets. It also explains why many of the burials took place away from Didmarton. There are also some marriages recorded in it. Here are a few more consecutive entries including the "Favour" children (presumably siblings) 1835 Nov 23
2. Re: [HWK] LONG of Chipping Sodbury [1]
Hi Patsy I am in the early stages of research for the LONG family but will certainly keep an eye out for any Witchell connection. 3. LONG of Chipping Sodbury [1]
I am new to this list and hope I am on the correct one. I have discovered my husbands ancestors were originally from the Chipping Sodbury/Great Badminton area and wondering if there is SKS that could check a baptism for me. I have a Charles Wickham LONG, born 29 Aug 1842 at Badminton who according to his birth certificate was the son of Charles James LONG and Ann Maria DAW, where I am slightly confused is that on his wedding certificate his father is listed as Joseph LONG deceased. I believe Charle

You don't deserve it Eric, because I have no patience with people who don't BACK UP their important files every time they use them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However I will send you a file in the next couple of days given your obvious repentence of your folly! I really am busy but I will do and I'll leave you to weed out all you don't need. 5. Re: [HWK] COOKS during first world war [1]
Eric, As Marylin said, the medal index cards will tell you nothing more than the medal awarded to that man. You may also get details such as the first theatre entered and the date of entry. Other details may include a date of discharge or entitlement to a Silver War Badge. If the man died this may also be stated. Any address will appear on the rear of these cards - and thus is not available on the fiche copy! Only looking at the original will give you this information, and currently the originals are

Hi Elaine, I have connections with the Longs ( m. Witchell) of Alderly/Tresham/ Gt Sherston etc. in the mid 1700s but have not followed them forwards. Hope that we can connect some branches as you move backwards...... 7. Re: [HWK] Interesting burials & Didmarton [1]
Hi Carole, I don't know how you find all this facinating and interesting information. Thanks a lot. Have had a look at the Archives site and lots of Witchell wills appear plus a case Witchell v. Hicks which I am desperate to see but will have to visit as too expensive and do not know how many pages. Perhaps and I hope some information regarding lands. Have not bought any medal cards as of yet presume that it is 'secure' to do so? Patsy on 15/10/05 11:03 pm, ANTHONY SHARP at sharpafc@btinternet.c

9. COOKS during first world war [1]
Ciao Tutti While on the matter of service records does anyone know how I can go about getting the service records of my grandfather Alfred Henry COOK (Gloucestershire Regiment) and my Great Grandfather Enoch COOK (Royal Engineers). The both served during the 1st World War my Grandfather in India and the Dardanelles and my Great Grandfather in France I think. 10. RE: [HWK] COOK & KITCHENS/RICHINS/RICHENS [1]
Oh, yes, Brian - I am well aware of variants. I have about 15 variations on my Irish Cullenan family. Current descendants in the Richings lines have all three of the spellings you suggest, and we add Ritchings to the list as well. It wouldn't do for things to be easy, would it. Interestingly, my mother was a Richings and my father was a Hitchins, both with antecedents in Gloucestershire. The Richings were at South Cerney, later Preston near Cirencester, later Hawkesbury because of the Allen connection.
11. Fw: [HWK] COOK & KITCHENS/RICHINS/RICHENS [1]
Ciao Tutti I don't know why but it seems some on the list did not get my last message regarding my belief in the certainty of Ritchins being the correct interpretation. My reason are set out below. 16. [HWK] COOK & KITCHENS/RICHINS/RICHENS [1]
Hello Joan There is a RICHINS site in the Family heritage Series, titles 'Richins Genealogy' and the URL was www.familyheritageseries.org/genealogy/d5.php I extracted from it their rather dodgy view of the COOK family, dodgy because they had Mary Richins marry the father of Sam Cook 1715; I've just had a quick look through my hard copy stuff to see if I can find the researcher who first suggested that Richens/Richins was the name, rather than the Kitchen which I and others had interpreted. As usual it was
17. LIMBRICK ALWAY [1]
Hi all A few weeks ago I was in Brecon. In the Cathedral on a plaque was the inscription,- The organ in the chancel was erected in 1962 as a memorial to the family of George Limbrick Alway, a generous benefactor of this Cathedral. The name struck me as familiar in the Hawkesbury area,It would be interesting to know if this family had origins in Hawkesbury. Regards Catherine

Hi Lisa Many thanks for bringing this to my attention. 24. Re: [HWK] COOK & KITCHENS/RICHINS/RICHENS [1]
We can all atempt to decipher the old writing with various attempts to rationalise and degrees of success. So I am not saying that Eric is wrong about the K & the R but Phillimore recorded thus:- Sam Cook (bach) of Hawkesbury and Mary Kitchins (sic) Spin tp (my sic!). I don't say he was always right but he did have the advantage of years of experience in reading these registers, so I would expect him to be more often right than I would be. Having said that Richins/Richens/Ritchens/Ritchins remain as variant
