When I visited Romsey in 2007, I visited the Visitor Information Office and was able to purchase Romsey Yesterday and Today by Barbara Burbridge and Gerald Ponting which was an excellent book on Romsey. Also the History of Romsey - A LTVAS Publication and Romsey in Charter Year 1607 & the Years that Followed also a LTVAS publication. They also had some great phamplets. I just looked in the History of Romsey Book and it has a little section on the bricklayers.

Thanks to suggestion for images of Abbey. I have tried Goodgle search for streets and have found Frityh collection,but somewhere i beleive there are some images of Latimer street which I just cannot find. can anyone reccomend a book with photos/engravings? I am trying to get as many images as I can to illustrate my famuily history.
Also the family I am researching , the RUSSENS, are,from 1740 termed as labourers. Romsey appears to have been very much a rural place but does anyione have any occupation infor

I wonder if anyone has access to 1861/1871 census indexes for Romsey. I am in the process of writing up the family history and have come accorss what I think could have been a mis-direction!
My husbands grandfather was George oliver Russen born in 1865 (in Southampton) his father was George Russen (married to Eliza Butt).This George was born Romsey 1842,father Richard Russen.
In 1881 cnesus i have a George Russen aged 42born Romsey as a Steward on board ship. I thought he and George above were one and the

LTVAS (Lower Test Valley Archaeology Society) have published lots of
booklets about the History of Romsey. They are really interesting. One I
remember was called "So Drunk he must have been to Romsey" which was the
story of all the Romsey pubs and brew houses. Lots of photos if I remember
correctly.
