Hi to all the above Rootsweb mailing listers who live in England,
Have you been watching the programme 'Heirhunters' which is being shown
presently at 9.15 every morning on BBC1? I've only just discovered it this week
and I love it! It shows a team of genealogists searching for relatives of
someone who has died without making a will and having no known family. They
look up the censuses to make up family trees, and births, deaths and marriages
to determine who make up the family and if they are
Further to my last email, SOG responded to the proposal, and you can see
this at:

I think the restrictions were meant to come in at the same time as the DOVE
project went live, but stand to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Donald,
You are absolutely correct, silly me, a "seniors moment no less.
Thank you for correcting me.
This mob moved around quite a bit around 1845-1855, Herts, Mdx and
Essex and back to Mdx, looking for work no doubt. Later on after the
death of their father in 1866 the result a farm accident my grandfather
and some of his siblings moved on to Bedford, where began to prosper.
Sometimes I confuse myself depending which family member I am chasing.
With regards to the siblings marrying siblings I have num
They are still there. I'll forward you a copy of the census. Dean

I also have been watching 'Heir Hunters' and wonder, 'how do they trace the
children/grandchildren born after 1901? How do they find their names and

Cindy,
I've just had a look at my 1793 map of Hertfordshire ( J Carey ) and
there is definitely somewhere called SLOWMANS near Watling Street
south of St Albans - the other side of the railway from Frogmore
Unfortunately the map is in a frame, so I can\t scan it and send to
you. However, it is online at
(lots of other old maps of Herts on this site)

Hi Dean
I believe you need to write to HALs to ascertain where the Electoral
Rolls for the area of interest are held, within the time frame you
specify. There is a charge for searching.
I found a date for a marriage (say 1915) and assumed there might have
been a child born born within 2 years, and looked for Electoral Roll
info circa 1935-1939 for example. It's hit and miss because Elections
weren't held during the war but I am resarching my family forward after
great grandparents emigrated in 1878

A Big Hello to Everyone,
I'm sure someone can answer this question for me. My ggggrandmother Sarah BRETT listed her birthplace on the 1851 Herts census as Slowman. She married her husband James TOMLIN at St. Mary's in Hitchin. Could someone tell me how far Slowman is from Hitchin. I once located Slowman on an old map but I can't find that same map. It must have been a very small town
Thanks,

Folks
I have a relative called William Anstee GINGER (b1803 in Northall, which I
think was historically Bucks). William's family appear to be connected to
the Ginger's of Edelsborough, made more difficult by the fact that William
was illegitimate - but after over 2 years of searching I can't find his
father, or any reference to likely candidates.
What I have found is that Willam's mother (Elizabeth Ginger b. c1775, Abbots
Langley) had a brother called Edward Ginger (b. 6/4/1776 Edelsborough), who

Dear Cindy & Anne,
Revising my search to look for a Sarah Tomlin, (whoops, I didn't read
Cindy's e-mail properly!), I find Sarah Brett married James Tomlin in 1815
in both Hitchin and Great Gaddesdon! (according to the IGI Family Search
.org - however, the latter would appear to be from LDS members rather than
from parish records, so is rather suspect!). My Herts FHS 1851 census disc
gives Sarah Tomlin as being born in Standon? (Transcriber's question mark
not mine!). I must say I wondered prior to
Hello,
I am trying to find members of the Jessop (possibly JESSUP) family in the St Albans area on behalf of Victor Raymond Jesso(u)p. Victor was born in the 1930s in the Maida Vale area of London.
Thank you,
Pippa Edwards, Brighton.
In Canada, if you want particular information that is not yours you have to show proof that you are related AND proof that the person you are requesting information about has been dead for at least 20 years. Otherwise, you must obtain their signature and approval to do so
With regard to my father's military records, they insist the oldest child of the family request them. However, the oldest child in our family is NOT my father's child so he has absolutely no interest in obtaining them. The second metho

when I had ancestry and could not find him either but Ancestry was

Thank you to those who replied to my questions about these families.
Monken Hadley indeed seems to have been moved about a lot -
Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Greater London. The copies of the parish
records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.
The info. about George Darby and Elizabeth Aylott is very helpful. I
suspect that my Elizabeth Darby was indeed a spinster as it said on the
marriage entry and that the 'widow' on the banns entry was an error. I
shall have to do some more hunting.

Hi, I have grave doubts about Ann b 1808/9 having a child as late as 1847 ,
it was possible but most unlikely then when child mortality even amongst the
young was very high .........have you got this Amelia`s birth certificate ?

Dear Cindy and Valerie - I have also spent some time looking for
Slowman and for Sarah Brett/Tomlin . On the 1851 census Ancestry has
her transcribed as coming from Stamen Herts.( It could read Slamen -
but that doesn't help much! In the 1861 census she says she comes from
Hitchin.
The only Slowman I could find mention of anywhere was a farm south of
St Albans - there were some deeds in HALS and there is now a Slowmans
Close - I presume where the farm once stood.
