Evening Doreen,
Congratulations on finishing your database.
Have any EMERSON`S turned up now you have completed your data base, I have
them from the St Mary`s, Birch register, so many christened and buried at
Birch but married elsewhere.

Sylvia

Many, many thanks to all those of you who replied to our query about

As a result of your replies we now have the answers that we needed

Hi Joan,
Just had a thought about your "Judging Eggs" message. There was a custom of
decorating eggs in Heywood, and probably other parts of the district. I
think sometime around Lent or Easter. The eggs were usually painted with
various designs. Could your ancestor have been judging the artwork or was
"judging eggs" his occupation.
There was still a decorated egg competition in Heywood around Eastertime in
the 1970 when my children were at primary school.

Hi Listers,
We'd like to start this month's news by returning to a subject
which keeps cropping up: Access to the Database. We are
frequently asked how to access the database for enquiries into
individuals or premises so we hope to provide a clear and
definitive answer.
The database will not be available on line for the following
reasons:
1. Size: The finished database will be of the order of 2.25
gigabytes. To put this into context, this is the equivalent of
a 5 CD-ROM set (including a search engine), or
Hi Listers,
The old cliche about needing more hours in the day has certainly
applied during the last month! The availability of the 1881 Census on
CD-ROM has meant that a greater number of submissions from this source
have come in and have been most welcome. In theory, 1881
should eventually be the best Indexed year of the century.
Following our brief, potted history of the origins of the name "Red
Lion," we have received a number of favourable comments. This month we
offer "The Marquis of Granby": A publ

Thank you Darren for your reply. I omitted to mention that I had tried
Rochdale office as well as Salford ( which was where John and Martha lived
at the time of the baptism ) with no luck. They probably did a few
"moonlight flits" judging by the movements in the Manchester area. John was
born in London, Middlesex from the census declaration but I haven't found
the baptism yet.
I don't know of a Margaret Bolton as yet ( apart from my sister that is )
but I will have another look in the light of what you have

G'day List,
I was wondering if, during your own research you have ever come across a
birth registration of a LEVI CUNLIFFE (my 2 x great grandfather). He was
born about 1815 - 1820 in Clifton (or thereabouts). He married in Middleton,
1839 to Rachel Bills, who herself was from Middleton. Their first son, John,
was born in Oldham-Above-Town. Levi's father was James but the birth /
christening registration and mother of Levi is causing problems. After 1840
they moved to Openshaw (and I have all their detai

I have been searching for the birth of my great grandfather Frederick
Bolton who was baptized in Manchester Cathedral on 26 May 1844 and there
was an annotation to give Born 17 March 1843. I checked with the Registrars
at Manchester, Ashton, Oldham and Thameside without ( them ) finding any
registration, so I have concluded that the birth was not registered ...
something I had not considered before but apparently it is not unknown! In

Has any one come across "judging eggs"? I have an ancestor that did this in
the Nags Head in Middleton in 1905 and I wonder if anyone else has heard of
it and if so, what did it entail? did they judge the size or what?
