As already mentioned by others, Scouse may have come from
Lobscouse (a sailors dish, consisting of meat stewed with
vegetables and a ship's biscuit" which I have in an old
British recipe book as coming from Cumberland) And as I
said in my response direct to Paul, growing up in Liverpool
we used to have Scouse frequently and when times were tough
we had 'blind-scouse' - no meat.
I have a souvenir from Lpool and it includes the following
recipes (only bears slight resemblance to the Scouse I still

Hello List,
My first post to you. I am Marjorie Thompson in NV. USA. Thank you for
letting me join this list. Now, I need your help please. looking for the
newspaper account of the death of GGGgrandfather.
George MUSKER in 1863. He took his own life by hanging, due to the
desperation when he was unable to find a job during the slump in the 1860's.
Leaving his wife Bridget alone to raise 8 children. If there is anyone who
could help me with this I would be most appreciative.
Regards,
Marjorie

Delphside Hospital sounds like it might have been a "fever hospital".
I have been told that my grandmother was a 'fever trained nurse'. Apparently
this meant you got your training free of charge, whereas in other hospitals
you would have to pay.
This would be about 1906, in Bootle or thereabouts.
I wonder if anyone knows which was the fever hospital for that area.

The very first I tried, I hit pay dirt. New Brunswick take the bows. Thanks

hasn't appeared on some of the other mailing list!
Just thought I would let you all know,

> Hi
Marian,
My gfather, Joseph James DUFFY, was buried 01JUN1950 at West Derby Cemetery,
Lowerhouse Lane. I don not know if this particular cemetary was in
operation in 1891, but I thought it might at least provide a lead.
BTW, the cost, in 1950, of a plot allowing 4 adults to be interred in the
one grave was the princely sum of 3 pounds.
Cheers,
Chris from Canberra, ACT

Greetings All,
Does anyone know anything about
'Newnham House School' or 'Newnham College'
a 'ladies school' at 105 Upper Parliament Street,
in the 1880s & 90s ?
The Principal was a Miss Alice NORTON, and I think she ran it in
partnership with her sister Mrs Eliza ANDREWS.
Their sister Sarah Ann NORTON also seems to have run a ladies school at
10 Thackeray St, Toxteth Park around the same time. Her married name was
HOUGHTON.
Does anyone know if Thackeray St. was re-numbered in the 1870/80s ?
Da
Hello. I recently visited your site and wish to make a request if it is at all possible for someone to attempt.
My ancestor, EDWARD CHARNOCK immigrated to Australia in 1842 from Liverpool. On the shipping document it noted that his parents were JOHN AND WINIFRED CHARNOCK (nee EDWARDS). His brother ROGER and family arrived in 1840. The following is the information I have so far of the family in Liverpool.
ROGER born 1809 London
JANE ANNE " 1811 "
ANN " 1813 "
GEORGE
Three ALLEN brothers from the Isle of Man moved to Liverpool in the
mid-19th century. They were Thomas Allen (b. Dec 1807), Edward Allen
(b. Oct 1814), and John Allen (b. Oct 1817). They were all three
tailors living at No. Leather Lane, Liverpool in 1841.
Thomas married Mary Radcliffe in Aug 1834 at St Nicholas, Liverpool.
Edward married Anne Kneale in Jan 1843 at Kirk Bradden, Isle of Man.
John married Catherine or Caroline, we are not sure.
Edward is found in the 1851, 1861, and 1881 censuses.

Does anyone know anything about
'James Norton, Confectioner' of 26 St James Place
between late 1850s and 1870s
Dave Andrews Gloucestershire
YES - there was such a thing - and it was called The Dockers' Umbrella'
because when it was raining the dock workers used to stand under it for
shelter.. it ran the whole length of the Dock Road - some 7 miles of it. It
was demolished in the 1970's - there should be some history about it in one
of the books on Liverpool at the Public Library.
I'm looking for a great-great-uncle Tom PAIGE (or PAGE) who, according to
