1. Re: [ENG-LIV] Fire watchers [1]
it means that here too Lilian. possibly one of those Victorian phrases the English forgot and then borrowed back in the 20thC? When I was a Labour Party member we used the "Reading" system (named after the town) for elections. At about teatime we would look at our lists to see who had promised us a vote. Then we'd take a list of the ones who hadn't voted and go 'knocking up'. No wonder so many people voted early! Judy ---------- >From: "Lilian and Morris Bowen" >To: ENG-LIVERPOOL-

Hi Ruth, I had a yearning to pay a visit to the old girl in March. It's currently laid up on the Thames near to the Woolwich Ferry. I've tried to contact the owner without success. I would have liked to get on board to take a few pics, but access is to it's berthing was impossible at the time. 3. [ENG-LIV] Genealogy poem [1]
Hi all, whilst sorting through my online files I came across a few genealogy poems, sad and funny. They are not written by me but were acquired from a number of lists. As it's been a while since I have seen then and we have new members I thought I would post them again. Hope this is ok with the Admin ladies? Regards Val in Lancs. Dear Ancestor, Your tombstone stands among the rest Neglected and alone The name and date are chiselled out On polished marble stone It reaches out to all who care It is to
4. [ENG-LIV] Last Poem [1]
Hello Ruth, I have a similar situation with my father's father. I never knew him and because the family never talked about it I always thought he had died long before I was born. As it turns out I was 6 years old when he died in a Mental Hospital. As in your situation he was buried in a pauper's grave with six others including an 8 month old baby girl but somebody, probably the Catholic nuns, had a stone erected with all the names listed along with their details. It was a very sad but also joyful moment whe

7. Re: [ENG-LIV] Gores Directory COLLIER TIMBER MERCHANTS? [1]
Hi Sheila, This is the only Fahey living in Garston in 1901 of either sex and any age. Her occupation is blank. There is no Margaret Fahey in Liverpool. Margaret Fahey 22 Ireland Lancashire Garston You would have to pay to go into the census to find who Margaret is living with, since she is the only Fahey in town. The only Collier merchant I found is a fish merchant and on a different census page than Margaret Good hunting, Joan Ottawa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sheila Brookes"

10. Re: [ENG-LIV] Fire watchers [1]
Hello All Another reason for a knock up was that a person who everybody knew as a "knocker upper" used to go around the houses and for a certain amount of money would "knock up" people for work where they could not afford to buy an alarm clock. My mother-in-law always used to talk about the lady who did their street - sometime in the 1930s. Hi, Thanks ever so much for the entries that you found for me, it was a stroke of genius on your part to think of checking the for the same batch number!! My next problem is going to be somehow accessing the actual church entry to get professions, addresses and witnesses etc, any ideas? 12. Re: [ENG-LIV] Submarine [1]
Hi, Susan: The submarine that your mother was referring to was probably the loss of HMS Thetis which sank while undergoing trials in Liverpool Bay on June 1, 1939, with the loss of the lives of 99 men. It is still one of the worst peacetime submarine disasters. See http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/6680/subs.htm All the best Chris --- Susan Dicker wrote: Hi, my mother used to tell of a cousin who died in a submarine that was stuck in the river Mersey, has anyone

14. [ENG-LIV] Thomas Shaw 1872 [1]
Would like to thank Liz and Lilian for their help and hints on trying to find my elusive Gt Grandfather Thomas Harrison Shaw. Has anyone on the list tried to obtain a birth certificate knowing only their name, possibly the year of birth and Fathers name - and if so what the cost would be? A brick wall I would love to break down! Many thanks. Sandra Liverpool

16. [ENG-LIV] one more address [1]
Dear everyone: you are all amazing! I just realised that I left one address off the list of `more addresses'. It is perhaps the most important because it appears to have been the very first address of the newly formed Isaac Low Company in probably 1818/1819. It was 5 Georges Dock Gates - that obviously means exactly what it says but does Georges Dock still exist? has it been gentrified? was it in the southern dock system mentioned by Christopher George? They did not stay there very long it seem

19. [ENG-LIV] Re: BVRI - 2 Query [1]
Dorothy, The BVRI (British Isles Vital record Index) version 2, lists 10.4 million Baptisms, and 1.9 million Marriages between the years 1530 - 1906. Most of these records are quite separate from those seen on the I.G.I. As it is just an index, you will not see the full details that would be shown on the original Parish record. Lancashire is quite well represented (825,657 Baptisms, and 287,538 Marriages), although some counties have far fewer entries than this. I did look for Edward Flaherty marriages i
20. [ENG-LIV] more addresses [1]
Hi: Going through all my notes I have discovered references to three other addresses for the Low's. 1821? Gore's Advertiser lists Andrew Low, merchant at 58 Bold Street 1821 ? Gore's Advertiser lists Isaac Low & Co at 15 Water Street. Does anyone know if any of these streets exist today and whether they would have been down near the docks and Old Hall Street where they bought and sold the cotton.? I apologise for not being precise but when I made those notes I was only trying to ascertain exactly when
