1. [SHEFF] Treeroot Walk, Sheffield. [1]
Thanks to all of you who answered my message regarding Treeroot Walk. I was hoping someone had written a history of the Hallamshire Hospital and its environs with photos. Does anyone know if something similar for Broom Cross? Apologies for not replying sooner but our daughter is getting married at weekend and the days are not long enough at the moment. 2. Re: [SHEFF] Tinsley Park Cemetery Burials - interesting info [1]
Its such a pity that stillborn burials were omitted, as the grave numbers and address's that would have been with them are therefore also missing, which I find VERY useful. Sometimes you can turn up a set of missing relatives that were buried with their maiden names, or remarried that the stillborn childs details may have helped you locate. Maybe in future they should be included. Dick > > Hi Folks, > > I can come up with a possible reason for the discrepancy that Tracy noticed. > We (the transcribers

5. Re: [SHEFF] SIR NATHANIEL CRESWICK [1]
Please excuse me if I nick a couple of quotes from my football history web site :- Nathaniel Creswick was one of the founding fathers of Sheffield football (and by extension football in this country and by extending the thought to the point of breaking, of world football) With William Prest, he founded Sheffield F.C. - the world's first real football club (as opposed to school team) in 1857 (and not 1855 as sometimes quoted) Sheffield Club, with no other opponents, spiced up their diet of intra-club kick

7. [SHEFF] Posser vs Posher [1]
I confess to be the culprit who first mentioned "posser" as the Leeds(& Bradford confirmed by Brian Richerby) version of Sheffield's "posher" and have enjoyed reading the recent contributions on the subject by Bill Franklin & David Binns. My mother in law's posser was also the size of a saucer, shaped like a watering can rose, made from brass or copper with a wooden handle fixed into a boss on the 'rose'. The up & down possing/possering action forced water into the holes in the face of the 'rose' and the wa
8. Re: [SHEFF] Tinsley Park Cemetery Burials - interesting info [1]
hello Tracy, I think there is some confusion at the Archives. Burial number 1 in the registers for Tinsley Park was on June 2nd 1882. The Tinsley Park (NBI) disks go up to 1973 rather than 1975. There are only 12xMULLINS (plus the 2xMULLIN) on the disks I have, so I don't know where the '19' comes from. Concerning the completeness of the NBI disks... The burial register stats I noted in the Archives show 5960 burials up to 15 Apr 1901. I checked the number of entries on the disks up to that date, and

Hi Jill, Sounds like an interesting player. I haven't got William Barker in my records - I'm up to about 1891 in my local footbal research - but next time I'm down the Local Studies I'll be sure to look him up and tell you what I've found. 11. Re: [SHEFF] Registry Offices [1]
I did not say there was no charge, there is a charge for church registers this is currently #14 for the first hour and #11 for each subsequent hour charges for civil registers are similar. The important point is there is access to the original registers held in churches and at the local register office. Blue Boy Street is still there, where Ann says, I drive along it most days, today included. Its full of small workshop type premises now, but the school building is still there I think, hence the street name 'blue boy' street after the uniforms the boys wore. It would be illegal for volunteers to "fill out certificates" current or otherwise. What was being proposed was volunteers transcribing the registers thereby providing a transcript as happens in other counties. 21. [SHEFF] Bad Certificates [1]
Steve, when you send back your certificate, make them send you a photocopy of the original, not a handwritten transcription, and don't you dare pay for it!! I had this experience and took the bad copy straight to the Family Records Centre when I was in London again. I asked to speak to a supervisor, showed him what I was sent and asked for a free, decent replacement. He tried to give me this song and dance routine of labor costs and how he'd lose money, blah blah, and I told him that if I was paying that
