G'day
There were a number of "gardens" around the area in the mid 1800s. I
guess they would have been equivalent to allotment site - which still
exist at various locations. Although primarily intended for individual
gardens (no doubt valuable in a city with so high a housing density and so
few houses with their own land) it appears that people did build cottages
on their gardens and live there.
Old maps shows - Abbeydale Road Gardens between Lowfields and Broadfields
(Heeley).

Gleadless DBY and Norton DBY.
Can someone tell me which register office I should apply to for birth certs?

Re: [SHEFF] PROGRAM TO ORGANIZE FAMILY FILES AND DATA
Just a thought...
I save all my certs etc in the proper archive quality clear document holders. These are then inserted in a number of two ring binders. One binder for each type of cert.
I reference my certificates with BIRxxx for birth certificates, MARxxx for marriage certs etc etc etc..... They are numbered as I file them and are not in any date / name order.
I then use these references in my main FH program (Brothers Keeper in my case)
If the 1891 census is searchable, could someone please do a look-up for me? I am looking for John James PINDER and his family. John would have been about 6 years old at the time having been born in Sheffield in ABT 1885.
Thanks for any help!

Hi.............I wondered if anyone has access to the 1871 Bradford census that they could look up a James Firth born abt 1864 for me? He married Mary Alice Acaster and had Alfred Arthur in 1896 in Morley. This is all I have on them.
Any help on my brick wall will be much appreciated.
Regards,

I wonder if anyone could help me. I am trying to find my ancestor,
George BIRKS. From the 1861 census, it seems his birthdate is 1823.
He gives his birthplace as Hoyland.
The only George BIRKS I have so far picked up is 1823, Warne upon
Dearne. Could it be that these places are close, and could match up,
or not? Not knowing Sheffield/Yorkshire, I have no idea at all.
George BIRKS' wife in 1864 Floods claims says she is a widow. After
applying for two George BIRKS' death certificates in that period -
Apologies for the mistaken renaming of Beauchief Gardens - I've obviously
spent too much time in the nearby Abbeydale Garden Centre ! :0)

Dear All,
Just to add my two pennorth, my first impression was one of disappointment
that the indexe was not more precise and that the cost was potentially huge.
However, having given it a go, I agree with Eric and Tim that the site has its
uses and that in some cases it could be vital. At first, I thought of it as a
potential competitor for Free BMD but it seems to be more a competitor with the
books found in the Myddleton St library or as fiches in county archives or LDS
centres. It costs me nothing
