Hello Joan in Canada. Following bit varied. Vaughan E, Minsterley, Pontesbury. 1840 Ellesmere etc. Boot & shoemakers listed: Antley Thos. St.Johns hill. Jackson Edward, High st. Turner Ann, High St. 1851 Ellesmere, formerly spelt Aelsmere. (partly in Flint, partly in county of Salop). PENELOPE VAUGHAN died 1805, bequeath
2. [ENG-SHROP] Ellesmere [1]
Joan. I regret that my Ellesmere researches so far have been pretty rudimentary and have not delved back to 1851. However, I will keep your interests in mind as I progress and let you know what I turn up. One oddity already discovered is that some people over the county and national border in Flintshire, Wales, were, during some periods, including in the Ellesmere Registration District for BMDs. I believe this went for other places such as Overton and Penley. The Genuki website lists which parishes were
3. Re: [ENG-SHROP] 19th century emigration from Shropshire [1]
Hello John and all listers My Husband's G Grandfather also left Whitchurch Shropshire sometime prior to 1876 and emigrated to Australia. Family history says he "paid for his own passgae", but unfortunately we cannot verify this at present. I too am researching the family history for clues as to why he left Shropshire to spend his working life in outback Australia. I would appreciate any information you may come across. 7. Re: [ENG-SHROP] Prees nr Whitchurch, United Reform Church. [1]
Hi Jo Do you happen to know if there a list anywhere of the names on these headstones? Some of my roots ( ASHLEY, WILLIAMS ) were from the Prees area. I don't know of a United Reform Church connection, but it is possible. 8. [ENG-SHROP] Scion Chapel, Oswestry [1]
I am looking at a wedding photograph of Robert Edwards and Dilys Roberts, circa 1920. In handwriting, it states the wedding took place "at Scion Chapel, Oswestry". In my internet searches, I cannot find a Scion Chapel in Oswestry. Its possible I am not reading the handwriting correctly. Can anyone help me locate this chapel and religious affiliation? 9. [ENG-SHROP] Billingtons at Preston Gubbals and Wellington, Shropshire [1]
I have a Sarah Billington who died at Wellington in 1855 at 81 years of age and I am trying to determine her parents. I have found in IGI a Sarah and Thomas Billington born at Preston Gubbals 1774 and 1772 respectively and am wondering if the Sarah's are one and the same. Further if anyone is working on any Wellington records and finds a burial inscription for Sarah I would really appreciate receiving a copy of it. According to the death certificate Sarah died May 19, 1855 at Jarrats Lane, Wellington
10. RE: [ENG-SHROP] new member [1]
Hello Jayne. My husband's family came from Bitterly, and my daughter and I visited there about two years ago. It is a lovely village. We were just leaving after looking at the graveyard and church one Sunday afternoon on a damp November day when a couple of cars drove up. It was the traveling pastor and about 5 or 7 parishioners. They invited us to stay for the services, then told us all about the church history. I mentioned that I was looking for the graves of Gil's family and two of the women invited
11. Re: [ENG-SHROP] 70 Steps in Shrewsbury [1]
Hi Graham, pleased to hear that the old 70 steps are still in existence, maybe I'll get to walk them once more if ever I can get back for a visit. About Woolworths moving to their present site. When I worked in Woolworths in 1957 - 1960 it was on Pride Hill, to the left of the 70 steps. Woolworths side entrance used to open up onto the steps as did doors in the stockrooms lower down. I'm not certain what year Woolworths moved, but it was well before 1971, which is the year I came to Australia.

20. RE: [ENG-SHROP] 19th century emigration from Shropshire [1]
Hello All By 1898 travel to Australia was relatively easy and he would most likely have gone by steamship. You don't say what state he was going to and finding information is helped with this information as most details are held at the Australian end. I have a copy of a ticket on the "SS Oruba" from London to Melbourne, Victoria in July 1890 and the cost for a single man was 14 pounds 6 shillings. I can email a copy of this to anyone who wants a look or post it on my website. see Eastern Empire log below.

23. Re: [ENG-SHROP] GUY family Shropshire [1]
Hi Sharon Quite a large number of Guys living in Staffordshire on the British Vital Records 2nd edition, but none that connects with this family, unfortunately. I checked for marriages of the children but could find none listed on the discs. Would you perhaps have some luck with the 1901 census online? And George might appear on the 1841 census of Whampton. You can obtain the microfilm of the 1851 Whampton census from the LDS folk. It is British Film No. 474627. And just in case you did not know Whampt
24. Re: [ENG-SHROP] Birth certificates [1]
If the sources are later censuses then perhaps you should go back and try and find the family in the Broseley area in 1851 when he was a child. His parents are more likely to know where he was born than he was! For example, when I was born my family were living in Aughton. I know I was actually born in Liverpool because a) my parents told me b) I got a passport when I was about 10 and it says POB Liverpool. In the 19thC things were different. With less paperwork and people dying young it would be very eas
25. [ENG-SHROP] Tips for finding Ellesmere 1806 Baptism? Dykes [1]
Hi all, Would anybody be able to make an suggestions in regards to researching the birth of someone in Ellesmere, Shropshire in 1806? This is my first search for a person away from the GRO Index so I'm not 100% certain how to go about it. I have a Joel Dykes born 1806 in Ellesmere according to the 1851 Census. I'm unable to find him on the 1881 to second the location and date though. I've searched the IGI online and have come up with nothing, though I note that the baptism records do exist for the period
