I am trying to trace my TREGO ancestry, I believe they could have possibly owned Quarries in Weston s Mare and a place called Shipham, near Cheddar.
Can anyone advise how i can check old ownership of any quarries in this area?
My family were decendents of John and William Trego from, I believe, Cannington or Bridgewater.

Hello Everyone,
Have completed today a fairly substantial update:
Wincanton Parish, Somerset - have added another 30yrs of baptisms from 1740
to 1769 and a few years of marriages from 1754 to 1760. Also added is an
article on Wincanton clockmakers.
Have also finally made a start on the SHIRLEY families adding information to
the website that I have accumulated in my so far unsuccessful search for my
own Shirley family. Please do drop me a line if you come across any Shirley
references at any time in
Dear Amanda, I am also looking for BRAY of Cornwall and Bowden/Bawden of
same place. The Bowden/Bawden came originally from Linkinghorn and in our
line Samuel Bray married Gertrude Bowden in Western Australia. I think both
families were in South Australia before comeing to Western Australia. What
info do you have on the BRAYS.
Regards Joan

Depends on your scanner and the program you are using.
Generally not much is achieved scanning more the 200DPI but 600 DPI will give you a good image.
Your program should allow a good preview of the picture prior to print.
Printing ensure your are selecting the correct paper. Wrong selection can be a disaster, for print only use best quality papier suitable for photo prints.
Other than that you may need to calibrate your scanner read your scanner set-up s to how you do that.

I don't think this affects many of us here, but in case it does, this
is my take on the subject of Spam Bars.
I note with some concern that my in-tray is increasingly becoming the
target of a new type of automated message - in the main caused by
programs which purport to bar spam. These may be fine for the user,
but they invariably subject others to an increased quantity of
automated garbage - as if there isn't enough of the stuff already!
This IMHO constitutes spam ie unsolicited mail.

Hello Paul,
Thank you so much for explaining this to me, I was finding it all very
confusing.
I have just been scrutinising the 1891 census return that I have for
'Hewish,' and you are quite right; in the left hand column, outside the
actual form, the enumerator has written 'West Crewkerne.'
Many thanks

Is anyone able to advise if there is a place names St Jude in Somerset.
The information I have is that a Daniel FITZGERALD married Mary ROYES in St Jude some time around 1860 - they then moved to Jersey CI.
The only St Jude I have located is in the Isle of Man - however, family info seems to point to Somerset as the birth place of Mary ROYES.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards

Regret Alison you are in that difficult position of not being able to
find out without buying the certificate
I hear plans are afoot to change the present situation, maybe for
records over a 100 years old, but AFAIK there is nothing concrete yet,
so don't hold your breath.
At present your only option is to spend your equivalent of GBP6.50 to
find out if you've got the right ones: see:
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/nsbase/registration/certificates.asp
There is some guidance at:

If I interpret you correctly, what you are looking at is Roman numerals,
written in lower-case English letters. Thus
1 = i
2 = ii
3 = iii
4 = iv or iiii
5 = v
etc. - you probably know the system. (If not, it's probably listed in the
back of a good dictionary, or you could try Googling.)
Quite often the final 'i' would be written as a 'j', so that 3 = iij.
This last 'ij' looks exactly like a y with two dots over it.
I'm not an expert about what was done when, but one way of writing a date
was to put

Yeovil Without includes (at least) that part of Mudford Road from
Hundredstone going out of Yeovil towards Mudford. It still exists, and even
today there is I think still a road sign just before one reaches
Hundredstone indicating the start of 'Yeovil Without'.
Hope that helps

As I understand it you can only do a personal search of the Superintendent
Registrar's Indexes, the original registers cannot be inspected by the public.
This is only realistic if you know the registration district in which the
event took place, and for marriages it is necessary to know exactly where and
when t

Dear Listers,
I am interested in my ancestor Josiah BRANCHFLOWER (b1801) in Taunton,
Somerset. So far I have not been able to find a birth record for him. He
married Elizabeth (Betsy) LITTLEJOHN in Taunton (don't have a date) and so
far I have nine children born to them between 1826 and 1839. The first four
children appear to have been born in Somerset, and the remaining ones in
London (Battersea/ Bethnal Green). Josiah was a silk weaver.
Can anyone tell me where to go next to find out about Josiah's birt

Shepton Mallet? I am looking for the listing of ISAAC

All of my Isaac and Sarah's children were born in
Clutton but a son Isaac is not listed and my near

Hi everyone
I wonder if anyone could help - I have found out that there used to be a public house in Kilmersdon called the Gauntlett Inn. In the 1851 census (I think) I found my gt gt grandfather there when previously he had been in the workhouse in Frome. I think this pub is now the Jolliffe Arms but I'm not sure.
Would anyone know if I am right and why he would have gone there - presumably to work, as his mother was widowed and in the poor house. Would he have been sent there, or could he have found
Dear Sirs
I would be thankful if you could provide me with information about the
Leigh House Farm (from 1870's - untill sometime in 1900's), near
Winsham, near Chard, Somerset. I know the house is now a hotel.
I am interested in information about the Henley family that owned Leigh
House in the past. Henry Cornish Henley was Esquire of Leigh House
(1870's - sometime in 1900's). He was married to Elizabeth. I would like
to know the names and birth dates of their children.
Thank you so much for your at
