2. [WISBECH] NW Norfolk areas on 1861 Cambridge census cds. [1]
For those of you like me, who have ancestors in NW Norfolk, I thought I would post what I have found re-places on the 1861 census cds being released by http://www.archivecdbooks.org/ The Norfolk cds include pieces RG 9/1190-1267 but not the pieces for the Norfolk villages below, which are in the registration district of Wisbech & will be included on the Cambridgeshire cds for 25 GB Pounds. The Index to Census Registration Districts book gives the piece numbers for Wisbech as 1047-1053. This list may n
3. [WISBECH] Cambs FHS - Cambridgeshire Wills Surname Index Project [1]
Dear Listers, The Cambridgeshire FHS is aware that there is much information to be gleaned from wills. The problem with wills is that you have to read them before you find those people involved in them. Most wills are indexed by the Testator/Testarix (the person whose Will it is). This is not much use when searching for other people mentioned within the will. To overcome this problem the CFHS are building an on-line wills surname index that will be searchable. Initially we are looking for any information i
4. [WISBECH] Cambs Wills Surname Index On-line [1]
Dear Listers, The Cambridgeshire Wills Surname Index is now on-line. It has only 52 entries but from little acorns do oak trees grow. We have now made a commitment to having this detail available on-line but we do need some entries for it; please use the Wills Submission form. A big THANK YOU to Pam Wright whose baby this is. She has put herself in the firing line completely by accepting to be coordinator - well done!!! Search data - http://www.cfhs.org.uk/WillsSurnameIndex/index.html Submit data - http:/
5. [WISBECH] New CFHS Search Facilities [1]
Dear Listers, The Cambridgeshire FHS has added further search facilities to their web site. The latest databases are: 1. Early Census Index - contains an index to the Early Census taken for individual parishes by the local incumbent. The fiche is available from the CFHS but this index will help in determining whether you have surnames listed. See http://www.cfhs.org.uk/EarlyCensusIndex/ 2. Bookstall Index - many people have requested that we make the bookstall searchable so all available items for one pa
6. [WISBECH] Update on NW Norfolk parishes on 1861 Cambs cd [1]

9. [WISBECH] WW1 Hospital Wisbech [1]
Hi List I have a photograph, taken around 1916, of my grandfather together with other wounded soldiers at a hospital which I think was located in the Wisbech area. The photograph shows some architectural detail of the building which I am trying to locate. Any ideas about how I can find out where this hospital might have been ? Kind regards Donald Manson
10. [WISBECH] Hitch Family [1]

11. [WISBECH] Staff-Gridgman [1]
Hello Listers, If anyone can help me know more about this family I would sincerely appreciate it. My ancestor is the daughter Mary Ann who immigrated to Australia. I am most interested to know more about her parents, i.e. their death and the ancestors. I believe Ann Gridgman may be related to Simon and Martha Gridgman who married in 1803 in West Walton, Norfolk. Many thanks for any help. Sincerely, Wendy Schmutz 1. 13. Re: [WISBECH] 1911 England & Wales Census - beta site now online [1]
As has been advised on the Lincsgen list, publicising the website is against the terms and conditions of the site. This is stated clearly on the site. I don't want to be a party pooper, but a beta version is a test site and is not meant to be widely used and as such would probably not be able to cope with excessive use at this time. 14. Re: [WISBECH] DUNBAR of Wisbech area. [1]
Hello, Violet Martin Hills DUNBAR (an odd name) had a son, Michael Andrew DUNBAR, birth registered in the Wisbech district in the third quarter 1941. Violet died, aged 23, her death registered in the Wisbech district first quarter 1943. I have not found her birth GRO registration 1918 - 1922. I am trying to find her family and where she came from. If anyone has any ideas or clues I will be eternally grateful. There was a DUNBAR family in South Lynn in 1901 with sons and daughters who could have been Viol
15. Re: [WISBECH] Gro index & Birth Cert [1]
Have you looked at CAMDEX - Cambridge and Wisbech districts registrations, online. I don't think I have the web address anymore (my computer lost all that stuff) but I think you can find it via a google search or via genuki. You can then order online the certificate from the district. It is possible the birth was filed in the district registration office but did not make it into the GRO, which is all of England. This happened to a marriage in my family in the 1840s and I knew the names of both the bride
16. Re: [WISBECH] Gro index & Birth Cert [1]
Thanks Guys I might try my luck with the Cambridgeshire registry office. That was also good advise about the "St.Catherine House BMD microfiche". I never knew that existed and will definately go looking for it. I did a quick search and located a copy at the NSW state library, but thats a little far, so I'll do some ringing around on Monday to see where else I can view a copy? I checked the LDS catalog and couldn't see it listed, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had it? Cheers Mark in Oz >From:
17. Re: [WISBECH] Gro index & Birth Cert [1]
Hi Mark... Don't know if this will help you atall, I found your family on the 1901 Census.. Name Mc Donald (note the space after the Mc) they are in Walsoken, which is the edge of Wisbech.. No Martin there so my suggestion for what it's worth is that Frank is your Martin??!!!!... Best wishes, Jennifer
18. Re: [WISBECH] Gro index & Birth Cert [1]
I just tried Male MacDonald but FreeBMD has nothing. Still worth trying spelling variants. Yes, there are libraries in New Zealand that have Ancestry.com - really handy if you live near one of them! I use FreeBMD at home, for marriages it will often give you possible spouses as well - easy to check which is the right one if you can use free censuses, 1881, 1901. 19. Re: [WISBECH] Gro index & Birth Cert [1]
Hi Mark I seem to remember when I wanted a certificate a few years ago, I wrote to the Cambridge Registry Office, and they didn't require the number. It was also cheaper! Is that still a possibility? 21. [WISBECH] NOBBS - Wisbeach General Register, Cambridgeshire [1]

Think you do have a problem! There is a Martin Joseph Macdonald born Liverpool December 1887. There are some Macdonalds born Wisbech such as Patrick 1893 and Thomas Richard 1887 and Alice Maud before that, as I'm sure you know! In the 1891 census they are hard to find! In Wisbech there are only Frank(2) Macdonell, Mary(4) Macdonell and Thomas Richard Macdonald aged 4. If you reply and then I don't, I am off to Scotland for a break! I thought GRO would do searches without the ref numbers-funny!Maybe you c
23. [WISBECH] Extracts from the Wisbech Standard & Wisbech Chronicle [1]
Whenever I get the chance when visiting my parents, I go into the library at Wisbech and peruse the films of the "Wisbech Standard" - usually searching for BMD notices and obits. As I have quite a few prints from these visits, I have started transcribing them and putting on my website - link below: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cawthorn/CLIPPINGS/index.html Have just added a few more pages for 1858, 1888 & 1889 Regards, Ann McClean in Llanmerewig, Mid-Wales, U.K. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CAWT
