Hi Tracey:
Short of DNA no! You mention no dates or location. Have you found his
baptism?
Sometimes the Vicar will write in the margin of the parish register "bastard
child" or write the parents singularly in the parents column. I have many
examples of that in my FH particularly in Whitechapel & Stepney. Perhaps the
couple were not married at the time of the birth (away at sea etc) but
subsequently married. Have you found the marriage of Goodman & Henry
Gibbons? Henry Gibbons could well be someone el

since it provides one hit on it's Old Electoral Role facility ...

Sorry, forgot to add that many people hitched rides up & down the river on
these barges as well, as many barges had very regular schedules, which may
be why Santa's ancestor might have had a second home at Upchurch. My
ancestors who moved from St Mary Hoo in Kent to Stepney had no trouble
keeping in contact with their family back home - prob because they knew the
local barge masters & hitched free rides with them.
The Medway was a significant water highway in Kent as well as mooring where

Hi all membersI have recently found online the a 1841 Directory for Narrow Street Ratcliff at the www.Historicaldirectories.org site. I understand that there were P.O.directories for London for 1839 &1843 and there may be others can any member, point me to them so that I may access them. I have in my possession a marriage cert. July 27th 1884 of a 2 x G Uncle
Albert Kite who was an Ivory Cutter. The marriage took place in St Thomas
Church Bethnal Green.
This certificate was found on a market stall by a browser who was fascinated
by its appearance and having no connection to my family, purchased it. He
later advertised it hoping to reunite it to a family member and fortunately
succeeded- me!!
The certificate is pale blue. across the top is the inscription

You're talking of the woman I love - my wife's name is Una! My mother had an
aunt Una Harding born in South Woodford in 1895. I don't know if it
originally was a Gaelic name - it's the Gaelic version of Agnes. It can be
spelt Oonagh in Gaelic. Charlie Chaplin's daughter was Oona.
Kind regards

Greetings from the Colonies and not a tornado in sight!
I am tangling with the name "UNA" anyone have that in their history? She was originally registered as ANNA - but all census give her as UNA. I am thinking perhaps the "accent" and the "scribe" where at odds. The name UNA did continue thru other generations.
Thanks
Shirley
Thank you for these interesting replies. The possibility that he was a
bargeman seems to fit with other details -- I actually think he (George
Peirce) may have been part owner of a barge. His son (Hervey Pierce)
describes himself as a "gentleman" at the baptism of his two children at St.
Dunstan's; he died a fairly wealthy man, also, his son (John Harvey Pierce)
owned the Edinburgh Castle (?) , a coal yard, and 400 feet of Thames
frontage, at the time of his death in 1818. Also perhaps tangentially

Thanks for the homepage info. I went to the Catholic FHS homepage and
reading through, the researcher who helped me was Barbara Murray. A
delightful lady from what I could tell from our correspondence. Charges in
2000 were very, very reasonable.
If you contact me off line I'll give you her details. I wasn't thinking when
I posted the Goggin address & phone number.

Having bought 4 certificates, all I have managed to achieve is the date of death of my g grandfather, it is highly likely that his birth was not registered. I also have the death certificate of a man who may prove to be his father, certainly the name and occupation fit, likely age is right. however I have no more.He died in the Sick Asylum Bromley 18/10/1886 of Pulmonary Gangrene, whatever that is, His residence was given as the Poplar Union Workhouse. As I have no place or date of birth, Ancestry is not mu

Hi Bob
I live in Ontario so thought I'd see what I could find for you.
I found Reuben and Susannah in the Ontario 1881 Census. I have ordered census film from the National Archives before, and they sent it out to my local family history centre for me to view and make copies. The number of the film is 1375885........
I also found a reference for Reuben under Ontario Canada deaths 1897 York.
You probably already have the marriage from December 1867 in Greenwich greater London, but thought I'd add that as wel
I have two Bethnal Green ancestors who were described on the 1851 census as
being an oarman and a sailor, respectively. They were relatively young, 18
and 20. Did these occupational descriptions hold any specific meaning or
were they simply used for the lower level seamen?

Does anyone have any information about this property - ie did it remain
a beer retailers (shop) after 1908?
I am looking for details about it and its occupants around 1916.

That's really interesting. I do recall having read somewhere about the Dr
Barnado's link - maybe from a visit to the Ragged School Museum in
Copperfield Road.
Was it knocked down before the 1960's though? I remember King George's
Fields as always being there, but I suppose this could be from 1962 onwards.
Actually, the 1914 map that I have does show a "Mission Church " just next
to a church in Edinburgh Road, above St Paul's Way. There is also a large
looking building (not named or identifie
Although the Edinburgh Castle was originally a pub, it was bought by Dr Barnardo and turned into a soup kitchen. It later became a chapel - I went to Sunday School there. It was demolished in the 1960s as part of the redevelopment of the area, much to the dismay of local residents.
