9. Victoria Arcade "Talmage Buildings" - Southend [1]
Recently received an old article re the Arcade from the Peeps into the Past. Article by Lynn TAIT (of "Postcard Gallery' fame). Articled mentioned the likes of Terry BOBIN, Thomas Habberley, and Lou MATTHEWS. It also mentioned the story about "Lord Jim" the street bookie who used to come to the arcade.... The closing quote was by Terry BOBIN in reference to the old arcade being torn down... "You can't bulldoze a memory..." The interesting question is who ran the "cockles and whelks" stall at the "

14. Re: Vandalisation of Essex Heritage [1]
This is happening all the time, even here in Enfield last year the developers tore down 4 old cottages, Ok they were derelict, but a little bit of TLC would have had them looking beautiful, they were at least 17th century. Instead they have erected a yellow brick box enclosing at least a dozen 'pissy' little boxes inside, its an absolute eyesore. Earlier last year they also demolished an 18th century inn without even a 'by your leave' to the local council, there was a big splash in the local papers abou
15. THANK YOU ALL... [1]
Hi All Thank you for your massive support re look-ups. I think now that we should close the subject, now that I have a back-up for what I did to help others. I have retained the print-offs and, providing they don't 'infringe copyright' (not copywrite, as I spelt it originally!!!!), I will quote from them if the trouble persists. I shall be taking a couple of weeks rest - partly because I have to prepare a list of books on France and the French, but mainly because I want to pursue MEAD records from SW Essex

24. CIVIL REGISTRATION REVIEW CHANGES [1]
A paragraph in the FRC Newsletter yesterday [see below] gives the timetable for introducing the changes. Unfortunately it gives no detail as to what changes (if any) may have been modified as a result of the consultation process, so I have e-mailed the given address to ask. The most important change for family historians is "new arrangements for access to birth & death registration information". The cynical may note that the first Order is to be laid before Parliament rises for the summer recess, thus ensur
25. Re: Saffron Walden, Tim Barrett & ARCHER [1]
I must thank many people on this list once again. I have had replies to my question about the butcher shop in the 1700's on the High Street in Saffron Walden. Have also had some people offering to help me find my second cousin Timothy Barrett. It was Tim Barrett who did all the research on my ARCHERs. He said that the butcher shop was about the middle of the High Street, but that is all that he told me. Of course, I realize that when he said 'the High Street', that would not necessarily be the name o
