1. Re: Hatfield Broadoak [1]
Thanks Wayne Thurley I have the connection Adelaide Mary PATMORE married John THURLEY. My Ann Prior is of same era as your Anne Prior but as both were having chidren during the same time span they would be diferent Ann(e)s. Incidently - you must be my cousin -several times removed! cheers Colin Patmore
2. Re: FTM & Baptisms [1]
Not quite as easy as that. I have an ancestor who mas married three times and who also had an illegitimate child between two of these marriages. When I print off any report concerning him, it includes the mother of this child as a 4th "spouse", no matter what I do. This is FTM Version 3.4 so it may have been rectified by now. 3. Re: Saffron/Walden Marriage [1]
Hi Lorraine, The IGI coverage for Essex is very poor, I don't know if you are aware that the IGI has only about 85% coverage over all, it is by no means a 100% coverage of births and marriages. It all depends if the Mormons have covered a certain parish or not, sometimes there is objection by the Church of England administrators (Bishops etc.) to the Mormons filming parish records and transcribing them etc. To find the parents of your ancestors, you will first have to look at the parish records for Saffro

5. Re: Parish records. [1]
There is an Essex Baptisms Index 1780-1840 covering 261 parishes available from: Mrs. J.D.E. Nutt, 15 Westfield Close, Wickford,Essex SS11 8JR There is of course a charge for using it, an updated parish list is available with SAE. Otherwise you really do have to rely on parish registers, there were no 'certificates' prior to 1837, only entries in parish registers. 6. Re: PATMORE [1]
Thanks Greg Lewin Philip has not been among the PATMORE firstnames and this Philip born 1813 is not on my list. Could be a grandson of Richard Henry PATMORE, or have you opened another door? Cheers Colin Patmore
7. Re: Railway Accidents [1]
Hello Michael I would think that you would need to first of all establish an exact date and location. Even when you are wanting to look through files on Railway accidents an exact date helps tremendously especially for "VIAs" (very important ancestors) like James O'Connor. Remember a) There should still be a death certificate for ca1871 and for this one there should be a little more detail involved because a coroner's court will have to establish a "cause of death" and "a date of death" and a "place of

9. Re: Fw: Unsubscribe [1]
Like a lot of people that I have had to remind lately that the instructions for unsubscribig are listed in the instructions received when you joined. Sorry to put this on the List but it is happening all the time. To unsubscribe eaddress is ESSEX-UK-L-request@rootsweb.com THEN Subject is Unsubscribe and MESSAGE is Unsubscribe. 12. 1851 Colchester Census index [1]
Could someone with access to this information look up the following people. They appear as witnesses / in laws on a marraige certifiacte I have purchased and may be able to shed some light on my ancestors circumstances at that time. James USHER, labourer (possibly born Dedham or Colchester) George ELMER any M. DRIVERs ( a vague request I know). Also, as an off chance, is there any reference to either of the first two on the 1881 census? Thanks John Broom Barnsley

14. Removed [1]
Hi to all I have a couple of questions. I have found that an ancestor of mine got "Removed" from Frindsbury in 1794. Could anybody throw some light on why this or any other person might have been removed and who would have ordered it. Also where might they have gone? I believe that they were removed back to the area/parish they came from but this needs confirmation. The other part of the question is what year did the unions start the work houses because they also seem to have taken over the parish Poor
15. Re: DUNMOW HALL Info Needed Please [1]
Jean Gatwick is in Sussex so try the Sussex list. With that number of windows it sounds more like the late 19C Chrystal Palace exhibition centre. One of the largest and grandest houses in Essex is Audley End built by the Earl of Suffolk to entertain King James 1. Photos I have of this house show that Audley End only has a fraction of the number of windows you mention. Just to check in case you meant Stansted Airport, I have perused a 19C map of that area which is west of Great Dunmow and can see no men
16. Lost road in Stratford [1]
I am looking for Victoria Terrace where my grandmother was born (no. 65) in 1887. According to the birth cert. her mother was living in West Ham Lane, Stratford at the time. There's no Victoria Terrace in the 1881 Census or the reproduction OS maps of the area. Does anyone know of it, or know somewhere I might look? Regards Philip
17. Re: unsubscribe [1]
Hi, On all the lists I have ever subscribed to (or unsubscribed from) the rules are the same, except for the Manx one, which for some reason asks for the message to be "leave list" rather than unsubscribe. (The "leave the instruction line balnk" bit is optional, as I understand it, because the instructions usually say something about typing the word "unsubscribe" there too, if your browser insists on a subject). I suspect that many of the unsubscribe messages which appear on the list are there simply bec

19. 1881 Look up HAWKES, Writtle [1]
Hello to all Essex subscribers. Is there anyone who can check the 1881 census for family or families called HAWKES in Writtle. I am looking for a John and Sarah in particular. Other HAWKES in Writtle could provide some clues. Best wishes from Finland where there is already an autumn nip in evenings and mornings. A wet an uninspiring summer is coming to an end. 20. Re: WEBB family [1]
Hi Milly The easiest????? way to trace details of English/Welsh B M & D is by using the General Register Office indexes. Here is some general information on English/Welsh Registration. Most large libraries, County Record Offices, Family History Centres operated by the Church of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), and research offices operated by some local Family History Societies in England have indexes to the Registrars returns on microfiche/film. Also LDS (Mormon) FHC's and many Library Facilities in other cou

22. Success ! [1]
Hi Folks. Thanks to the Essex Surnames interest list, I am now in contact with a First cousin, once removed, her daughter, and her Grandchildren. Until two weeks ago, I didn't even know that they existed. They all live in British Columbia, and we have been furiously exchanging E-Mails and 'phone calls. A lot of "brick walls" have now come down. My point is, however long you have been researching, Keep checking that list !. Tedvol@Hotmail.com ( Market Weighton) Researching :
23. Child Welfare [1]
Hi Does anyone out there know if there was any organization in ESSEX along the same lines as today's Child Welfare or Children's Services Departments who had the authority to remove children from the custody of their parents in the period 1850-1880. Thanks everyone Robyn (Aust)
24. Cause of death [1]
Hello Listers, My thanks to all of you who replied to my Thydrops Genualis query. We have narrowed it down to a general retention of fluid due to heart or kidney failure or water on the knee. Water on the knee may sound too trivial to be a cause of death but I have an ancestor who died of a sore throat! Thanks again. Linda Southend on Sea
25. Member of Parliament: Essex [1]
Where might be the very best places to research via the internet a member of Parliament in Essex? Any information one can provide as to the best sites to research the following, to include the family, would be greatly appreciated. Andrew Johnston's home was located in Rennyhill, formally the possession of the Lumsdens or Lumsdaines of Innergellie. It is in the same location as the Minister's Manse. I would very much like to contact via the internet any source whom may have information regarding Renny
