3. Re: staked through the heart etc [1]
Colleen - sorry about delay in answering this - been busy launching a book! I don't know the legislation by name, my reference came from Keith Thomas 'Religion and the Decline of Magic' page 711 which says just this and does not give any further details. I suppose you could look through a list of all the Acts of Parliament passed in 1823 and see which one applies. I guess the superstition went back to an age when magic was never very far from the world of the rural poor, how else to explain so many inexpli

Hello list, Just a little snippet of life in 1893. I have just purchased abook, (very cheap) called the "The Home Friend 1893-4" published in Edinburgh. It's an almanack of a monthly magazine. Very Christian and what would possibl be called wholesome. In each magazine there is "Young Women's Christian Association Supplement".Here are a couple of queries from "Notes & Queries" in the magazine. "Can anyone kindly tell Ivy the best and prettiest way to crochet a child's petticoat?" "Coul

Hi Janet Sounds like Preventive Service. That would be highly likely in an area like the Thames Estuary. A Preventive Officer is like a Customs Officer, but instead of finding contraband he prevents contraband coming into the country. Hi all again, Just a quickie before Elmo blocks me from posting again. This is really sad, as I promised toi behave myself last time, never mind, it allows me more time to do some genealogy and not piddle round checking emails for new postings. Anyway, here goes ...... I have traced the Wil;ding family back to Suffolk, sort of, and what a bad lot they were , well according to Colleen the Wildings were a bad lot! I think there were too many horse thieves in Essex.

16. Re: ALBUMINURIA Disease [1]
Albuminuria is the term used to describe albumin in the patients urine. It is generally indicative of some level of kidney failure and not related to a diabetic condition. Simple tests to detect sugar were available in 1915 and if positive would presumably have been mentioned with the albuminuria. 17. Re: Charges [1]
In my experience it varies from bank to bank. I was asked #15 by Abbey National to cash a Euro cheque a couple of years ago and The Royal Bank of Scotland are about the same. I have an account at both banks. Ask your bank about a T.T. (Telegraphic Transfer from your bank to their bank account) You will have to pay charges at your end but it might be cheaper than a cheque. 18. Re: DIXEY [1]
Hello, According to the 1881 Census, Daniel DIXEY the son was born in Maldon, Essex, as you say, in 1855. By 1881 he was working as a cabinet maker and living at 22 Navarre Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, with his family. His wife was Phoebe, aged 24, born at Kirton, Suffolk. They had 3 children (though of course they may have gone on to have more after 1881), all born in Ipswich: Daniel, aged 3, Emma, aged 2, and George, aged 11 months. There are several DIXEYs on the 1861 Census Index for the Registration

22. AYLOTT census lookup? [1]
I am trying to find out where William S Aylott, who is on the LDS 1881 census at 135 Herries Rd, Chelsea, was actually born. He is said to be 57 so pre GRO registers. The transcript claims Raintring ?, Hertford, which I know isn't Essex but: 1. Can anyone guess where it might be in Herts? 2. Or does anyone have access to the 1881 census itself and could peer at the handwriting? 3. Or does anyone have access to an earlier census index which might help me locate this guy? The Essex Soc of Fam. History (ESoFH) has produced a series of about 24 3.5 inch floppies covering the 1861 census in Essex. These are surname indexes and contain only these data: Surname Forename(s) Age Piece Folio Parish Age Birthplace, relationship, occupation, etc are not included. See http://www.esfh.org.uk/ These floppies can be bought at meetings of the society or direct from the society. The price varies from #2.50 to #3.50 I think, but this is on the website. Hi Chris, There are various Polish clubs/organisations in London who might be able to help. The person in question would no doubt be classed, as my mother in law was, as a displaced person and may or may not have applied for British citizenship, however, they may not have done. My mother in law assumed that she automatically had become a British citizen, which actually wasn't the case as we discovered 8 years ago, she then applied for British citizenship. During the war years and for some time afterwards s
