1. RE: 1851 United Kingdom Census Sample [1]
Hi John, Maybe it's about time to add the 1861 indexes. Do they have the clout to take on the Family History societies? God bless, too. Hiya, Has any got the 1861 census for Thornwood Epping - Duck Lane and they could look for me for Thomas HUDGELL and wife Sarah and anyone else in the family please, the information and image would be great, The images for the 1881 have gone online at Ancestry.co.uk so I think I'm in for a lot of printing this afternoon, but any help with the 1861 would be much appreciated............ 3. CARTER, Colchester - Colchester Evening Echo email [1]
So presumably you now need to find Walter's marriage and death certificate and to see know if he's in the trade directories? Did he have a trade or enough money to have a directory listing? The census after 1901 isn't released yet - but a letter to the local newspaper might make contact with other Carters descended from Walter. The website for emails to the Colchester Evening Echo site is: http://www.thisisessex.co.uk/essex/contactus/letters.html Colleen ----- Original Message ----- > From:
4. Great Warley & COOPER family. [1]
Good morning listers. I am having a problem with tracing my Grandfather's family in Great Warley. Recently I purchased a CD from the EFHS which appeared to be the full index for the 1851 census. However I found that Great Warley was not included. When I queried this with the EFHS they informed me that they do not cover Great Warley as it now comes under the East of London FHS. When I enquired there I was told that they do not cover it as it is covered by the EFHS! It seems that Gt. Warley is in noman's

7. Re: The parishes of Stanway [was: COLFIELD, TURNER, SILLETT at Stanway 1650s] [1]
Thank you very much, David, Most informative. I shall add that to my growing knowledge of the parishes. The Civil War reference might explain a lot. If I understand things right, some ministers followed the new edict, others ignored it and continued as before. I have seen (in Suffolk registers) notes to the effect that after a certain date, entries are to be found in the Cromwellian registers. The Sillett events I'm seeking are during and before the rebellion. Brian Sillett ----- Original Message -----
8. RE: censusfinder.com [1]
Hi All again, Perhaps I should explain the posting last night. This is genealogy related, so bear with me, please. I, and many others, spend hours and hours, creating web sites for others to enjoy. I am spending hours and hours on Ian's essexpubs, as is John Mead who is supplying me with new info every day, as is Diane Lord who set it all up, as is Colleen who is continually finding new info, as is Josi, too. Hit the refresh button regularly if you visit Ian's rejuvenated essexpubs

11. Re: Beer, trivia, etc. on a genealogy list? [1]
I think there may have been an association the other way between inns and both blacksmiths (or at least farriers) and wheelwrights. Having an inn attracted people who needed both services. More than one of my wheelwrighting Essex Ayletts seems to have kept an inn in the 19thC. Ruth ---- > Hear hear, Colleen. I grew up in Epping and my mother worked in an office in Sunnyside Road, apart from the first few houses and a few factories, I remember that it was all council houses - I went to school with quite a few people from there. I realise that this is not what you were looking for, but if may add to Lawrence's very comprehensive reply. Regards Jill

Hi all, I am trying to keep this very low profile, but fingers are itching. As many of you are aware, Ian's site was turned off, for whatever reason, a week or so ago. A group of us, all well-known members of this list, have been umming and arghhing about how we can continue this monumental work. I have offered the web space, of which I have plenty (and therefore a simple problem sorted), and Ian's site is now restored to its former glory for all to see, visit, and search.
20. ALLGAR, CHRISTMAS or CHRISTMAN of Messing, Essex - anyone studying these names? [1]
I've been re-examining my notes about families from Messing, Essex, in particular the family and descendants of William Allgar (or Algor) b. 1536, d. 2 Aug 1575. His daughter, Bridget Allgar, m. Robert White first, then married John Christmas or Christman, Jr. on 28 Sep 1618 in Messing. They had two sons, Richard and John. Since he was a Jr., we can assume a John Christmas, Sr. There is a record for a Thomas Bird marrying Anne Christmas in Cambridgeshire. From the IGI: Marriages: Spouses: TH

Dear List, I have included my original email for reference but it has now been confirmed having received the most delighful set of papers from the USA for Joseph Cobb which states he was born in Colchester and he and his wife sailed from Liverpool on the 29th September 1872 and arrived in the States on 12th October. Joseph was born in 1844 to James Cobb and Mary Ann. James was born about 1799 Copford and superindent of St Botolphs Cemetery. It would be great if anyone has a connection. Thanks. Kind rega
23. RE: Essex/ALLSUP/ALSOP family [1]
Hi Cassie. Apologies for the late reply but I've been in Germany for a few days. Back now. Firstly you need to be certain of the placename. There is a Waltham Cross, but it is in Hertfordshire, right next to the county border with Essex. Inside the Essex border at this same point is the town of Waltham Abbey. Just to confuse things, the town of Waltham Abbey (along with a few hamlets) lies within the ecclesiastical parish of Waltham Holy Cross, and could easily be referred to in old docs as either Waltham
