1. Re: [FO] FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 5 [1]
I don't know if you told me which version of Family Origins you are using, if you did, I don't remember it so I am using FOW 8 right now. --the later ones are mostly the same -- Click on File => Restore You see a little window, "Backup to Restore" in which you can browse to find the backup file on your floppy drive. (Use the down arrow at the right of "Look in:" to see a wider view of your computer, the floppy is usually called "Floppy (A)" or "Removable (A)" or something like that. When you click on
2. Re: [FO] FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 5 [1]
So, yes this version is not new and was put on my pc with a FO patch( sent to me by a friend in Ohio)(the beginning is really vague now). The book I purchased says third edition. So.I do not FO 8 . What do you thing about proceededing with the 'restor' directions you sent? I will give it a go if this older version is designed to take these directions. (oh, boy). 5. [FO] 3.0 to new versions [1]
I am still using 3.0. I tried many years ago going to 4.0 (I think) or 5.0. My problem was evidently I began using 3.0 incorrectly? I would go to a source page and if I had 3 different sources for say Date Born, I would enter all sources in the one pop up page. When I tried to upgrade, the newer version would not transfer all 3 sources properly. I can't remember completely but I think it would only transfer part of the sources for that page or take all 3 and run them together like one sentence.

An external drive is something that you plug into your computer while you write to it or read from it, and then you can unplug it and take it with you, maybe, to another computer. Most computers made within this century have what is called a USB port or plug-in socket where these external drives can be connected. this port provides a data path and enough power to run the flash memory drives, but the external hard drives sometimes need their own electric power connection. What is the external drrive you speak of ? And how do I check the floppy I have been using? I guess I could use more than one. I just got lazy using the same one and not knowing how to check it. the external thing I should probably know about too. thanks for any information about this back up procedure. Tell me if there is a way (or a program) that will permit me to input ALL of the data I have in Family Origins into a current program. My daughter told me about the Roots program and I am aiming toward that, but I wondered if you know of anything other genealogy program. 14. [FO] Family Origins 4 .DLL Error [1]
I have Family Origins 4.0. I have encountered an error that has disabled my program. The error message is as follows: "FOWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module FOWIN_DB.DLL at 0001:637A" Can anyone help me? Thanks, Ron
15. Re: [FO] FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 5 [1]
No, you do not have to back up to a CD. You can backup to floppies, but they have pretty well gone out of style now, most new computers do not have a floppy drive installed. You can write your backup file to any medium you have available. the new USB flash drives are becoming quite popular and external hard drives are coming down in price all of the time. Use whatever you have, just check it once in a while to make sure it is readable. Alfred D. Eller http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~adelr/in
16. Re: [FO] FAMILY-ORIGINS-USERS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 5 [1]
On the RootsMagic web site. http://www.rootsmagic.com/ Click on "Buy it", You can back out anytime before spending the money. (it is $19.95 for download, and $19.95 plus shipping and handling for CD, and ten dollars higher if you want to include the book, The book is probably worth it, especially for new RootsMagic users. Zoe, Thank you so much for sending the FO 6! I installed it and tried to open my old FO file. What I found was that I also have some corruption of my data. That means I have to rebuild a lot of it. I've already begun a rebuild on RootsMagic. But, when I get it done, I may see if I can import the RootsMagic file into the FO 6. Again, thanks for your generosity! I will re read the multiple disc info, for now I have the two discsnumbered Also do not know how large the data base has become .How do I obtain this information? I have not made excessive notes and I have not had time to put in the photos I want. so perhaps it is not too large. Janice **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. I'm old fashioned, too, Janice.? I back my 3 databases constantly w/floppies (3 floppies per database in case of failure).? If I had pix in my databases I'd have to go to cd or flashdrive but, since I don't... why waste the cds? RootsMagic is the replacement for Family Origins and is a step up in capabilities. You should be able to transfer all your data to it without any problems. I made the change and have been completely satisfied. There is another program, Family Tree Maker, that is more sophisticated, but a little more complicated to use. I have it also because of it's supurb capability to allow you write and print a book about your ancestors. Howard Jeter ----- Original Message ----- From: To:
