1. Genealogy Hall of Shame [1]
The Genealogy Hall Of Shame is designed to be a place where items of warning are posted, in an effort to educate the Genealogical researchers on those items of scandalous history they should be aware of. http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/shame/index.html Sally Rolls Pavia sallypavia2001@yahoo.com List Owner: GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES-L-request@rootsweb.com Archives: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/GENEALOGYBITSANDPIECES "All incoming and outgoing email checked by Norton Anti-Virus"
2. Church Record Transcripts are taken from records held at the Somerset Record Office [1]
The Church Record Transcripts are taken from records held at the Somerset Record Office. This is an ongoing project that will be extended at regular intervals. Many of the records are very faint and some entries are entered where the recorder could find a space, these therefore appear to be out of order. Note: The Julian Calendar was used until 1752 when the Gregorian Calendar was adopted putting us in line with the rest of Europe. This meant the loss of eleven days between the 3rd and the 13th of Septemb

5. Consider Donating Research to Surname Associations by Coralee Griswold [1]
A suggestion for those people who have family research but no place to leave it. Check to see if your surname has an association that would like to archive the work. Cyndislist.com (www.cyndislist.com) has an extensive list of active associations and from experience I can tell you the Griswold Family Association has been the fortunate recipient of work that would have been otherwise lost. A local genealogical Society is also a good place. Sally Rolls Pavia sallypavia2001@yahoo.com List Owner: GENEALOGYBI

9. How to Use the Pedigree Chart & Family Group Sheet [1]
Binders are bulky and laptops not always available. That's why taking pedigree charts and family group sheets along on genealogy research trips is a good idea. How to Use the Pedigree Chart & Family Group Sheet http://genealogy.about.com/od/free_charts/a/forms.htm?once=true&nl=1 The two most basic forms used by genealogists to record ancestral information are the pedigree chart and the family group sheet. 10. Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in Philippine Islands [1]
[This is a wonderful site. You can tell that a lot of work has gone into this project. Dave and Apple should really be congratulated. Sally] The Tablets of the Missing are located at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. The Tablets honor the names of America's servicemen that are Missing in Action or Buried at Sea in the South Pacific during World War II. 11. William Clarke Quantrill, 1837-1865 [1]
William Clarke Quantrill, 1837-1865 Leader of perhaps the most savage fighting unit in the Civil War, William Quantrill developed a style of guerrilla warfare that terrorized civilians and soldiers alike. Quantrill was born in 1837 in Ohio, but little is known of his early life. It appears that after being a schoolteacher for several years, he travelled to Utah in 1858 with an army wagon train and there made his living as a gambler, using the alias of Charles Hart. After a year, he moved to Lawrence, Kansa

13. 18 May 1863, The siege of Vicksburg commences .. sorry if you get a duplicate, sending to several mailing lists [1]
On this day, Union General Ulysses S. Grant surrounds Vicksburg, the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, in one of the most brilliant campaigns of the war. Beginning in the winter of 1862-63, Grant made several attempts to capture Vicksburg. In March, he marched his army down the west bank of the Mississippi, while union Admiral David Porter's flotilla ran past the substantial batteries that protected the city. They met south of the city, and Grant crossed the river and entered Mississip
14. This Day in History .. 24 May 2005; WWII [1]
1941 The Bismarck sinks the Hood On this day in 1941, Germany's largest battleship, the Bismarck, sinks the pride of the British fleet, HMS Hood. The Bismarck was the most modern of Germany's battleships, a prize coveted by other nation's navies, even while still in the blueprint stage (Hitler handed over a copy of its blueprints to Joseph Stalin as a concession during the days of the Hitler-Stalin neutrality pact). The HMS Hood, originally launched in 1918, was Britain's largest battle cruiser (41,200 to

16. This Day in History .. 7 May 1915, Lusitania Sinks; On April 4, the Senate Declares War on Germany [1]
LUSITANIA SINKS: May 7, 1915 On the afternoon of May 7, 1915, the British ocean liner Lusitania is torpedoed without warning by a German submarine off the south coast of Ireland. Within 20 minutes, the vessel sank into the Celtic Sea. Of 1,959 passengers and crew, 1,198 people were drowned, including 128 Americans. The attack aroused considerable indignation in the United States, but Germany defended the action, noting that it had issued warnings of its intent to attack all ships, neutral or otherwise, t
17. Interesting Bit of English History ... DECEASED WIFE'S SISTER MARRIAGE ACT [1]
DECEASED WIFE'S SISTER MARRIAGE ACT Did you know that until 1907 it was illegal for a widower to marry his dead wife's sister? There were many attempts to change the law - Queen Victoria herself supported one failed attempt in 1879 - and a prominent Victorian, the pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt, openly defied the law in 1875 when marrying Edith Waugh, the sister of his late wife Fanny. Many ordinary people also broke the law, possibly through ignorance, and you may well find an instanc

20. Exploring Westmoreland by Sherry Irvine, CGRS, FSA (Scot) [1]
Until 1974 Westmoreland was the name of a county in the north of England. Today it survives as part of a place name, Appleby-in-Westmoreland. I have embarked on this exploration because of a revived interest in some ancestors of my paternal grandmother. The file popped to the surface in my recent move, and at the same time, ideas popped into my head. It is quite possible enough material can be found online to assess the chances of making progress and, going a step farther, perhaps I will be able to view i

In the opening battle of England's War of the Roses, the Yorkists defeat King Henry VI's Lancastrian forces at St. Albans, 20 miles northwest of London. Many Lancastrian nobles perished, including Edmund Beaufort, the duke of Somerset, and the king was forced to submit to the rule of his cousin, Richard of York. The dynastic struggle between the House of York, whose badge was a white rose, and the House of Lancaster, later associated with a red rose, would stretch on for 30 years. Both families, closely rela
