Hi All,
Stampede time ...
Right, As Dave has mentioned in his email earlier, the changes to the Db
worked but the increase in Db size has negated the improvements to the
range check.
We need to look at rewriting it, or equivalent utilities:
So, can you let me know your requirements and the relative priorities
you have for them and I'll try and put some sanity into your responses.
The things that range-check does would probably not appear in the same
script again, so we will almost certainly be creatin
Hi Ian
There are five possible conditions
1) File has been transcribed and uploaded to FreeBMD and sent
to coordinator (No action, Complete)
2) File has been transcribed and sent to FreeBMD
only. (action required)
3) File has been transcribed and sent to Coordinator only.
(action Required)
4) File Allocated but not yet transcribed
5) File not Allocated.
For this you need the Coordinators record and the FreeBMD

take place through co-ordinators?
No John, I don't agree. If there is a system for picking out duplicate
files, then let it be centralised. Why bother finding out which syndicate a
member belongs, find out the coordinator, email the coordinator so that the
coordinator can send out the exact email, when the coordinator has less
knowledge about the problem? The coordinator is in no position to check the
details of a members duplicate

I would also like to add the number of entries (it was useful for catching
those transcribers that continue to put multiple pages in a file even when
asked not to)
Bye for now

Hi Graham
Steve's right in the comment that we need a basic file list output for
button 1 and we can do without the bells and whistles but a list of files
without some indication of if it is a syndicate file or a one name study
file will be of little use.
The "current" way of determining one name study files is the Submitter
ID of Peter Hendy-Hibbs (foolproof but not the ID of every one name study)
or a variation in entries per file (non-foolproof). To give you an idea of
the problem with one name

I should point out that if a transcriber mistakenly deletes or
overwrites a file that has been uploaded, we *can* recover it.

I assume that these people would have felt the need to contact you whoever sent
the e-mail though, so Allan sending the stuff out hasn't caused any INCREASE in
workload for you (unless I'm missing something).

Hi Graham
I would like for Christmas.
For the File Range Check
Only Sequenced files to be shown. This should remove the one name studies.
A text file download with tab separators. (separators negotiable)
For the Page Range Check
An indication of where a delinquent page number comes from. Delinquent
being defined as a different district from the before and after district
(maybe a bit simplistic).
The indication to include in order of preference
The entry
The file number
The Submitter I
Hello Graham,
Using the original range check as the example, I would like:
Surname
Transcriber
Filename
First names if possible but not absolutely essential.
The rest of the information provided by the range check was not important.

Hi Graham
Thank you for putting the report names otherwise I'd have been lost.
New bits marked *** are further down.
Can I throw in more.
For 1 - Pages Completed I would like all the info that we used to get
but if it would make it more difficult I would accept minimum info to get
going. The full info does sometimes show up weird things but these weird
things are rare.
Can I suggest the other reports, 2 to 4, are of little use. There are
possibly better ways of achieving what these are suppo
I cannot let Dave's thoughtful reply go without further comment.
I am already receiving feedback from transcribers who have been contacted by
Allan, so my work has increased anyway.
I asked: "Is the FreeBMD Syndicate Co-ordinator taking over syndicate
co-ordinators responsibilities for the accuracy of syndicate
transcriptions?"
And Dave replied: "No. The syndicate co-ordinator's responsibility is
primarily for the completeness of the transcriptions. Some co-ordinators

This is a suggestion to get over the problem you mentioned in your mail.

In the past I always assumed that the range check gave results based on
the last update and not necessarily current information. It doesn't matter
if this assumption is right or wrong. Cannot the range check (button 1 type

Is this because it is new ? Or will it always just be 12 months ?
Or will it start again on Jan 3rd
Just want to know so if it is restarting I need to collect them in case

I must admit I had thought about Bob's suggestion that the "range check" be done automatically and sent or collected by the co-ordinators but wasn't game to suggest it
I think it would be nice to let the coordinators know if a new sort of checking was being done - the first thing most of the transcribers do is throw it back at us so we find out anyhow
And it would be good if we knew who was getting them - I'm more worried about what some of them will do who do not let us know
However its all going ama

I am sure Dave will correct me if I am wrong, but this is just because
the beginning of Jan this year was when we started to migrate to the new
machines and some/most/all dates got reset ....

Just a reminder to Syndicate Co-ordinators about the ongoing process to
delete from the FreeBMD database those volunteers who haven't uploaded any
records within the 12 months following their initial registration on
FreeBMD.
Co-ordinators are requested to check their "Syndicate Maintenance" for
details of the volunteers deleted by me as explained in
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/delete_submitterID.html

Very common sense suggestions and requests regarding the check on uploaded
files, and I agree with them all as they don't seem to be contradictory.
Please keep the lead surname though, it helps in spotting wrongly numbered
files and other mistakes. But let's get something working soon; I would
rather have a check that simply lists all the files uploaded for any given
quarter NOW, than wait for an all singing and dancing version next year. I
am really desperate to get this sorted and find out what has been u

Yup, when we migrate
Hi Brian,
I don't follow what you are saying - could you perhaps explain where I'm
making such an assumption, I don't think I made any?

Hi John
Sorry to take a little while to answer this query, you are aware of the
problem with access to my PC.
I've picked up the various responses from Dave, Graham plus your good self
to your original query below.
I can't add much to what Dave and Graham provided in their responses, but
will readily hold up my hand to say Syndicate Co-ordinators should have been
advised by me on the action I was going to take. I can also ensure you the
action I am taking in no way takes over any of the excellent work do
Hello Graham,
Sorry about that. The one I need is 'Pages Completed'. I am not sure of the
need for the others!
