I would agree that the possibility of all Friedman's being directly related is quit distant from reality. When the Germanic jews were forced to have conventional names as opposed to "x ben y". Therefore, people from many different political jurisdictions decided that the names would either be pleasant ones and some were even forced to take on names they did not necessarily want. My review of our ancestory is based on geography and the commonality of relations. Shalom, Arthur friedman Sorry, I do
5. Joseph Bernard FRIEDMAN[N] [0.990813]
My great-grandfather was Joseph Bernard FRIEDMAN. Family oral history has it that he emigrated to the New York area sometime between 1850 and 1860, and was drafted into the Union Army during the War Between the States. We know nothing of his military career. He is said to have mustered out somewhere in the southern states, most likely in Louisiana or Mississippi. What is certain is that by about 1872, he had settled in a small town in St. Charles Parish, LA, southwest of New Orleans, called Boutte (pronou

Sorry, I don't think I can help you. But I'm writing to say that I think all Friedmans are NOT related to one another. The name comes from too many disparate places in Europe. I think, rather, that when surnames were being adopted, there must have been a lot of independent families in a lot of different places who liked the sound of the name (in German, it means Man of Peace), and therefore adopted it independently. My father, Oscar (Osher Gershon) Friedman came from either Pruzhany (his childhood home) in Grodna gabernia (BELARUS) or Pinsk in 1908. He had 2 sisters one in NY (Bashka [Becky] Simonofsky) and one in Appleton, WI (Pia Simonofsky) and other siblings left in Russia.. Names in the family are Friedmann, Simonofsky, HALPERN OR GOLPER, LONDON, Shlimovitz, Anish and others that I would have to look up.. My dad's maternal grandfather was a building contractor in Chomsk. Shalom, Arthur Friedman WISCONSI
8. Re: Friedman Family [0.990813]
Hi, Jean, Yep, that works! In German, Frieden Mann means Man of Peace. You can see how it was just shortened a bit to make Friedmann, and then eventually the second n was dropped. My ggfather listed his parents' name as Friedmann, too, with the double n. But he seems to have used the single-n form. Your family comes from Baden, Germany, and mine comes from Courland (Latvia), and others come from all over that part of Europe. We can't all be related, I fear. And I can't seem to find another Friedman f
