1. Re: [GACHATTO] Fw: Chattooga County [1]
Sorry to respond to the list, but I don;t see an e-mail address for Ms. Jenkins: The county was named for the river and the river (one of two in Georgia by the name) came from a Cherokee phrase: Chattooga (River) - From the Cherokee "Tsatu-gi", although some say the meaning is not clear and appears to be of non-Cherokee origin. Others say it is Cherokee and means "has crossed the river" and "drank by sips" or "he sips". There is some indication of an ancient settlement named "Tsatu-gi" that was on
2. Re: [GACHATTO] District 1028 of Chattooga Co, GA [1]
In the original thirteen colonies, lands were broken up into numbered Land Lots and Districts, where original lines often followed natural features such as ridges or streams.. In states added later, surveys followed a system based on breaking down rectangles of latitude and longitude. Except for new counties being created from old ones, there is no reason why district 1028 shouldn't be where it was 200 years ago. The county tax assessor's office should have this information. ----- Original Message -----

6. Re: [GACHATTO] cememtery look up [1]
Hello, Does anyone have a cemetery book on Mount Joy Cemetery in Chattooga County. I believe that it was near a church and there may not be many names in it and it may no longer be used. It may be in the Subligna area. I need a listing of all people buried in the cemetery, if possible. Thanks Beverly Foster
