Dear list,
I went to the library to do the obit lookups for you and only have bad
news to report. The older newspapers only rarely have death notices and
I gave myself quite the headache looking for them. I started with the
later years first, hoping to have some success. But the records are
spotty, and some months just aren't there (maybe the newspapers didn't
survive to be microfilmed?). I also had limited time as I had to go in
to work on my day off to take a conference call (which was fairly
useless
Natalie,
could you look for obit for John Alexander died 14 July 1827, i think his
obit was ran in the Athens Gazette 20th July 1827...
thanks, Robert Alexander 5th great grandson of John.

Hey gang,
I made another trip to the library and was slightly more successful this
time on obit lookups.
Bruce,
The newspapers have James and Morning Spullocks - not Spurlocks-
listed. I assume they are yours anyway. No obits but plenty of legal
notices.

Until about the 1830s I think it was, it took an ACT OF THE LEGISLATURE for
a divorce to be given!!! You'll find the mention of the divorce in the
legislative acts for the year! No details are given (unfortunately) in the
minutes, but maybe the local courts might still have some of the "dirt"!

Could someone tell me where I can find the marriage record for Travis
STRAUGHN and Nancy CLARK? They were married in Clarke County in 1813. They
had a daughter Sirena Sheffield STRAUGHN, my ancestor, in 1814 or 1815. I
have not been able to find a record that she exists. I have found a list of
Travis and Nancy's children, but Sirena was not listed. Nancy's mother was
Charity SHEFFIELD, so it makes sense that that's Sirena's middle name.
Where can I prove her birth and parentage? Any help will be appre

Jimmy, just divorces over 100 years old would be fine! A lot of people don't
even realize that people got divorced in the 19th century, but they did. One
of my 19th century ancestors got divorced because her new husband beat her,

Natalie's right, folks! The Georgia Newspapers Project microfilmed as many
newspapers as they could find (some they have the originals in their
collection - others they went to the courthouse of the county to see if the
Clerk of Court's office or the Probate office might have the older issues in
bound volumes - legal records).
For the earlier deaths (pre-Civil War), it seems that only the more
prominent people got coverage in the newspapers. After the Civil War, you
will find obits & writeups for prominent
