I located information that states, persons enlisted in the 16th Battalion, Ga. Cavalary. On Jan 16th, 1865, Special Orders #12 was issued designating the Unit as the 13th Regiment, Ga. Cavalary. Pension records application referred to the 16th Ga. Cavalary and were filed under the 13th Ga. Cavalary.

Marjorie, I don't know the WHOLE story, but a number of families from the Jasper/Morgan Co., GA area (the next county south of Watkinsville, but still on the Oconee River) went into Illinois in the 1810-1820 era. Maybe that's how you got Oconee up there.

In the 1994 draft of the Oconee Hill Cemetery re-copying done by members of the Athens Historical Society were found these markers - evidently the stones do NOT give any further information about the Smith children. Note that these were the only markers extant in the lot - if there were more burials in that lot, they have not been confirmed yet (the revision & annotation of the 1971 edition of Oconee Hill's Old Section is in progress).
