Captain Busk-Wood's OBE was Gazetted on 22 Dec 1942 and this is a remarkably
fast reaction by the relevant Honours and Awards Committee. There was no
citation published in the London Gazette. To credit a merchant ship with a
kill of any kind during this time would have surely provoked the German
armed forces into more aggressive action. My father's ship had a confirmed
kill, but whilst this appears on his unpublished citation, the published
version was heavily censored, presumably to protect him. You mu

Chris, Unfortunately there is no one with the name GOFF who was awarded a
DCM. The dates/ages you give seem a little improbable to me. If he signed
up in 1914 and was born in 1857, he would have been 57 on the outbreak of
WW1 and would have been 88 by 1945. I wonder if he served in the Boer Wars
and WW1? Or in the Sudan?
Let me know if you can get more info on him specifically, or you could try
to get his service details from the NRA/Army?

Lt Harold West received a DSC (stripping Enemy Mines) and MID (rescuing
survivors of ss ATHENIA - sunk 3 Sep 1939) whilst serving with HMS ESCORT:
London Gazette, 24 Apr 1940. An MID for mine disposal at HMS PEMBROKE:
London Gazette, 20 Dec 1940. A bar to his DSC (dealing with a German
parachute mine) at RN barracks, Portsmouth: London Gazette, 2 Jun 1943.
The history of HMS VERNON (the RN's mine countermeasures establishment is
given in "The Torpedomen" by N. Poland, and may be worth a look.

Hi, I am looking for information on Lt. Harold West, Royal Navy. who was awarded the DSC & bar, and was twice mentioned in despatches in 1940/41.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I've recently discovered, although it's been on my Sea Gallantry database
for years, that a Lt Max Kennedy Horton, possibly of Western Approaches
fame, was awarded a Sea Gallantry Medal in Silver for an act of bravery when
serving aboard HMS DUKE OF EDINBURGH on 13 Dec 1911. If any Lister has
access to Sir Max Horton's biography, could they check whether this incident
is mentioned please?
Another winner was Capt E.R.G.R Evans (later Admiral of the Fleet Lord
Mountevans of the Broke) of HMS CARLISLE, and o

Dear Bernard,
I've just heard that a distant relative had been awarded the D.C.M. and wondered whether you might be able to find anything about the award.
His name was Frank GOFF, born about 1857 in Northamptonshire.
He was in the (? Northants.) Territorials and "the whole regiment enlisted to a man at the outbreak of war in 1914"
"After special training in Thetford Forest for 12 months after wich they were sent to (?) Egypt"
At some time he seems to have joined the Machine Gun Corps where he became
Sam, Alexander MacKay, Chief Engineer of Ferry ss LADY CONNAUGHT was awarded
an MBE (Gazetted March 1941) and a Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea
(Lloyd's List 30 July 1941) for his service following the ship striking a
mine and being damaged in the Irish Sea on 27 December 1940. The ship
survived the war.
His Lloyd's Medal citation reads: "The ship was hit and badly damaged by
the explosion. She listed to starboard and began to settle. Ship was

Do any Listers know anything of fishermen's service records? I've had an
enquiry as follows:
John William HANDFORD served as 2nd Hand RNR from 3 Nov 14 to 22 Feb 19. He
received 1914-15 Star, BWM and VM. It is believed that he served in WW2 on
Steam Trawlers out of Grimsby and went to Dunkirk. He received 1939-45 Star
and War Medal.
His family believe he was given a Gold Watch by the owners for bringing a
fishing trawler home when the skipper was lost, but have no dates, nor other
details.
Can anyone s
