The land that is present day Ft. Benning land was lived on from
approximately 1830 until near the end of World War I (1918) when the
military training camp came into existence.
Do any of you have any personal stories about your ancestors who lived in
that area....and how they were reimbursed for the land? Did they move out
of state?
Were there actual deeds for the transaction filed in the Courthouse? How
would they be listed?

ever heard of him?? Thanks Zou Feagin zfeagin@aol.com

We have received so much wonderful assistance from Ft. Benning personnel
and I'm delighted to share with you the map they have provided.
The KEY point we always need to keep in mind is that everyone MUST obtain
permission before visiting the cemeteries. Directions are on these pages,
so please follow them. It is my understanding that they are always very
helpful to visitors, but you must make arrangements prior to your visit.
This map needs Adobe Viewer, however, so I apologize if some of you do not

Looking for the family of David 'Charles' Crichton born c1859 in GA, father
born in Scotland, believe mother born in Switzerland or Denmark.

Carole, I checked the Social Security Death Index for Junius STONE and found
that he was born June 18, 1906 and died December 1976. His last known
address was Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA 31906. His social security card
#260-60-3667 was issued in GA in 1956.
I thought I would post this information so whoever looks for the obit for
you would have an easier time finding it since the death occurred in
December 1976 instead of 1965.

I have been able to find very little that is reliable about my Gilmore
ancestors. My great great grandmother, Sarah Jane Gilmore Ritch was born 11
Dec 1816 and died 12 Apr 1891 according to her Tombstone. She was born in
Washington Co GA according to the 1850 Muscogee Co GA Census. I know that
she had a sister who never married and I have always assumed, without proof
that Thomas C. Gilmore was their brother. Sarah Jane Gilmore Ritch would
have been 44 in 1860 and so the ages do not rule out thei

Hope this answers your question about the flood and the 14th Street Bridge in Columbus, Ga.
My grandmother, her mother, grandmother and gr grandmother lived in Columbus from about 1890 to about 1924 (O'Neal/Webb/Dixon family). She often told me of a flood in Columbus that washed away all
the precious items that they stored under their homes (which sat on bricks--no basements) in chests. Very little survived this flood.

Hello
Is there anyone connected with the LANDON family of Muscogee County?
There is a marriage for Wm. B. Landon and Frances B. Peters in Muscogee
County, GA 24 May 1842.
My Ann LANDON, her sister Martha, and brother, Benjamin, were all in
Dallas County, AR, by 1850. They were apparently orphaned because they
were living with the Broach and O'Kelly families. I haven't a clue as
to their parents' names.
Thank you

I have never researched what this land sold for when it was deeded to the

the family cemeteries would be maintained. I have visited several of them
