Tom,
The Gillespie family is mentioned in at least one of the books available for purchase at the Rabun County Historical Society. I bought all three books for my Daddy for Father's Day and they have been a big hit with him.
I went to school with some Gillespies in Rabun County in the early 1960's. I also noticed in the "People" book that Gillespies and McCurrys were connected. I just found that article this afternoon while reading some of the book to my Dad. I have McCurry connections as well as Mc

I have information on the family of Mary Elvira "Polly" Gillespie and Pleasant Watts. I understand she was the daughter of William Gillespie and Juda Hensley. I am from the Watts family and would be glad to share what information I have if you do not have it.

Do you know their children? There are probably "poor school" records for
Rabun. These were lists of pupils that "public school teachers" taught and
were then paid for. We have some on-line for Upson Co for instance.
Does anyone know where they might be for Rabun county? Courthouse?
I found these in the County Court house in Clayton several years ago.

I can trace back to my Great Great Grandfather James W. Roberts and wife Harriet Elizabeth Bryant of Franklin/Habersham counties GA. I cannot prove further than James W. although I have some ideas.
I do not have a Laura Elizabeth Roberts McKay in my tree....so far.

Sometimes people wonder just how many people are reading the messages on a
County List.
GARABUN has 132 subscribers!
Let's hear from folks about what things you're stuck on about Rabun County
ancestors.
Rabun Co was formed in 1819 --- very old compared to some counties!!
It was formed from "Cherokee Lands" - -meaning it was part of the Land
Lottery of 1820.
Wish we had that listing on-line!

My g-g-g-grandfather moved to Rabun County in the mid 1820's from NC. There
are still a few of the family still in the area and a lot are buried there. I
am interested in Gillespie's and related families. Have some info on the
family but always open to receive, and pass on, info as it becomes available.
Thanks!

I'm researching the Swaffords/Becks of Warwoman District, Rabun County.
Specifically, my husband is descended from E.D. (Dred) SWAFFORD and Adeline BECK.
Dred and Adeline's son, Martin, married Christina BOWERS producing Carter Tate
SWAFFORD. Carter (or "Tiny" as he was called rather facetiously) married at
least twice, the first time giving rise to Larry Scott SWAFFORD in Copperhill,
Polk County, Tennessee. Larry is my husband's father.
I am interested in any related families. Most
Hi All:
I've been working on my husband's Rabun Co., GA families for many years now.
You can find listings for them at my website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hemlockhill
His paternal lines are from ENGLISH which connect in the Persimmon community
His maternal lines are from RITCHIE which connect in the Valley and Mountain

Many interconnections.

I have a question about BECKs.
In 1850 there was a family on the 1850 census listed as Merchants; John BECK
and wife Elizabeth with 3 month old son Eugenius....... My question why did
they have living with them one Sarah A. HUNNICUTT age 24?
Does anyone know the connection of BECK to the HUNNICUTTs or possibly to
MATHIS which was Sarah's maiden name?

This is what I have on the children of Mary Elvira "Polly" and Pleasant Watts. It is from Watts descendants as well as records from Rabun Co., GA and other counties and states but it is always possible there are mistakes.
MARY ELVIRA "POLLY" GILLESPIE was born May 23, 1805 in NC, and died February 04, 1884 in Fairmount, Gordon Co., GA. She married PLEASANT WILLIAM WATTS December 02, 1821 in Burke Co., NC, son of JOSEPH WATTS and ELIZABETH LYDIA ANN CARGILE. He was born November 01, 1796 in Buncombe Co., NC
I have a William Roberts but he is my Great Grandfather and he married Sarah E. Peyton.
I'll look around for your William Roberts on the internet.

I know this list is not for advertising for-sale items and services, but I
had to share this.
SK Publications is offering a census CD with images of the Rabun County
Federal censuses (free population schedules) for the years 1830, 1840, 1850,
1860, 1870 and 1880 on one CD for $20. The quality of these CDs is
top-notch. For more information:

These images are also online, BUT what you'll get on the CD is a far greater
quality than what's online.

ancestors! We were SO happy to share the data.

EXCELLENT. Next to census, cemeteries are the best place to find your
people!!! You can't beat a cemetery with head stones and monuments or ( as
my folks did) home made headstones.
Thanks Elaine.
