These sound like RI surnames -- I am descended from Gardners of NY and also from Cottrells of RI (the Gardners I am descended from originally came from RI; the Cottrells are of a different line). Gardner is more common; definitely, Cottrells you might look up some of the published genealogies that I am told exist of the RI branch, though haven't researched myself.
