I've been trying to sort out the Sumter County Smiths, so glad to see the recent posts. Mine was Thomas H. Smith who was born in 1816 and was thought to have lived in Talbot and Muscogee Counties before coming to Sumter. He married Nancy Carmichael in 1834. Nancy's father had come from Scotland to the Carolinas to Sumter County and can be found on the 1840 census index posted on the Sumter County GenWeb site.
