Rift runs through Jefferson family reunion
By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Under the shade of ancient oaks,
the grave of Thomas Jefferson lies immaculately
preserved, protected by a black iron fence that his
descendants erected a half-century ago. Every year,
500,000 visitors to Monticello look past padlocked gates

Query:
I know there's a microfilmed index to Colored Troops, and also a microfilmed
set of capsule histories of each regiment (Both available at links from
Afrigeneas.com). But the official guide to military records at Nati'l Archives
doesn't show any individual service records? Were they all tossed, or were they
just never microfilmed?
Curious researcher
I have just joined the list and it looks exciting. I am researching the
BARAGWANATH surname and would appreciate anything on the family(s) in South
Africa. I am mindful that the name is well known but I have not been able to
raise contact with anyone. I am writing a book on this name and would not
like to see it go to press without the S.A. connection.
Kind Regards

Priscilla,
You must tell us where these people live(d). Dates and places are as
important as names. Almost. And what is the relation of these people to
each other? Just starting out? Take your time and you will find lots of
people willing to help you.
Good Luck,

I have not posted to this group for some time but wonder if the names
detailed above have re-surfaced in anybody's research?
I continue to chase any reference to RAAFF, however minor. The earliest
reference is to NICHOLAS RAAFF who died in South Africa c.1830. Where did
he originate from? He was married to Maria Louisa MEYER (1791-1851). Where
did she originate from and who are her parents and wider family group? Most
importantly, who were their children?

I am trying to find some of my great-grandmother's relatives. My great-
grandmother's name was Cecil Fern Manley, daughter of Elizabeth
(Lizzie) Burgess Manley and Jerry Manley. Cecil's Manley's maternal
grandmother is supposedly Nancy Brewington. Siblings of Elizabeth
Burgess Manley are Bill Burgess, Lucinda Burgess Washington (a/k/
Lucinda Burgess Gleghorn), Viola Burgess Washington, and May Burgess
Brown.
I would be very greatful for any additional information.
Thank you for your time.
Below is transcript of a will I picked up from a Marshall site
(www.familytreemaker.com/users/m/a/r/Andrew-W-Marshall/index.html)
Note the second bequest item. I'd always assumed that "Anakin" was a made-up
name by George Lucas, but notice the Anakin here in the second bequest item of
James Marshall. I did a quick check through Ancestry.com and discovered that
Anakin is a rare but real surname; it shows up in census indexes for 1840
(Ohio) and 1850 (New York City); at familysearch.org, it is given as an

The female name Anneka or Anica (various spellings) is fairly common in South
Carolina among slave women in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and
continuing into the late 19th century. It has been said to be an African
name....does anyone know whether its a given name in Africa?
