My Great Grandfather's last name was Hess. Was this a common name in throughout Germany in the the 18th and 19th Century, or is identified with a certain area? 5. REPOST: Address for civil records in Vienna, Austria? [1]
I got no responses last time I posted this.... I am after a copy of my father's birth certificate (civil) from Vienna, Austria. Does someone know of the address of the central office of births, deaths and marriages in Vienna to which I might write? I saw this on the internet - and I'm hoping you can help me - give me leads where to look. My grandfather's mother - family orginates in germany. I don't know where. I am try to find where the name comes from or what it means. My grandfather was born in Poland - so at some time the family moved to Poland from Germany. 11. MIRGELER [1]
Looking for any information about Wilhelm Mirgeler who landed in New York in July of 1845 in New York and who seettled in Wisconsin Territory prior to 1847. On his notice of intent for naturalisation his name is spelled Mergel but on his actual nat. certificate it is spelled Mirgeler. All other documents are spelled Mirgeler. He came from Prussia I'm guessing the Rhineland becuse of other hints. Can anyone check the German Phone book for current ditribution of the name? Please e-mail any response to bilpep@

One should not presume persons named Warner were of English ancestry. The name is also commonly found throughout Germany. Also many Germans named Werner had their name anglicized to Warner upon immigration to the U.S. If ones Warner ancestors lived in heavily German populated areas in Pennsylvania and Ohio, chances are they were probably of German ancestry. Ich suche nach Moeglichkeiten einen Leonhard Bieker der vor 1878 als Maschinist (oder Heizer o.ae.) auf einem Schiff zwischen Hamburg und Amerika beschaeftigt gewesen sein soll ausfindig zu machen. Ab 1878 wird dieser in Amerika genannt. Dort hatte er sich dann aber eine andere Identitaet (adlige Eltern!) zugelegt, so dass ich nicht glaube dass er in irgendeiner offiziellen "Auswandererliste" aufgefuehrt ist, sondern aufgrund seines Jobs illegal in Amerika einwandern konnte. Die Familie ist zwischen 1690 und 1701 aus Rafz weggezogen. Im Staatsarchiv Zuerich findet sich unter der Nr.
