June 9 2003 A box of letters was recently discovered that contains more than 50 Civil War battlefield letters written to a business man in the North East, apparently after arranging for (buying) his own deferrment. Apparently he provided many of his drafted employees with pre-addressed and postage-paid envelopes so they could report to him on the progress of the war.
