Hello!
Surprisingly, there are many people in Hungary whose last name (family
name) is KALMAR.
Kalmar, to my knowledge, is from Sweden..just like to city Kalmar and
the "kingdom" which was the city (yes, I hope I am expressing myself
well!).
I am not sure what Kalmar means actually - perhaps does it have a
meaning.
I have been trying to figure out for a few years (little research) how
this name travelled to Hungary and when.
I have been unsuccessful in figuring out an answer.
Perhaps one of you out ther

Well, only two (or four if you count composite names) of that name are
listed in the phone book in Helsinki. That IS few, taking into account
that I once knew somebody by that name.

Not common, only in some parts, mainly in Northern Sweden.

Hello again, Al.
You ask very good questions. I think that the site which you
will find most useful is John Follesdal's Norway Genealogy
page, at:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/index.html
I would suggest a good starting point for you would be his article
on Norwegian Naming Practices, listed under his header, "My articles".
His "My articles" section is something you would get much benefit
from.
Regarding the ships lists, there is an organization called, I
believe, the "Immigrants ships transcri

I have located my great-grandparents in the 1865 Norwegian census, but cannot

tell me what 'stort kveg' means, and also the unit of land used. Thanks very
much.

Hi, Paul (or KMW?).
There is a wealth of information available to you - census records (1865
will be helpful to you, especially, as they'll both be living with
their parents at the time). John Follesdal has built the ultimate in
Norwegian genealogy page, which has more info than you could read in
a lifetime.
I've got links to useful sites like these on my homepage. Norway info at:

We're here - haven't gone anywhere. I haven't noticed low traffic, maybe
it's your ISP's problem?
In any case, got a question? We'll give it a shot.

If you are searching for a Bertha try Berte which is the Norwwegian way of
spelling. My Great Grandmother was named Berte but her spelling changed when
she came to the states to Bertha. I hope this helps.
Great site, John.
I have a question - I've been building a fairly extensive
gedcom of Hedmark genealogy from various sources. Are there
plans, or is there interest, in having a Hedmark database
(dis-Hedmark if you will)?

Hello, Al.
Do you know the middle name, "P.", of both of these brothers? I
would *guess* it to be Petersen (or varient). That information
would be quite helpful, as it could tell us that their father
was named Peter (or varient).
Patronymic naming stopped in Norway right around this time in
some areas, so it may be a family name by then, but the fact
that two brothers seem to have the same "middle" name would indicate
to me that this may be a patronymic name.
