2. Re: [GEN-NYS] Nathaniel KIDDER (Cont'd.) [1]
Betty, Color me red for embarrassed. There is a Capt. Nathaniel Kidder who was ostensibly a notorious whaler in the time frame I mentioned yesterday. He is shown on GOOGLE but as I understand it he was still in action so to speak in 1891. The daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Kidder buried here in Sacramento was indeed the wife of William Chamberlain [who was Daniel Webster's 1st cousin that I mentioned yesterday] but he was not the same person mentioned as the notorious whaler I have in Sacramento who die

6. Re: [GEN-NYS] KIDDER research [1]
Actually Betty, I was made my statement that way as an exclamation sort of as disbelief. Nathaniel Kidder of Ma. was sort of a notorious whaler. I was surprised that you hadn't heard of him. He was a whaler from about the 1840's until the 1890s if I understand correctly. He was most active in the 1870's. One of his daughters married a man named William Chamberlain who became VP of the Bank of Ca. This is not important in and of itself but Chamberlain was the first cousin of Daniel Webster. mari

11. [GEN-NYS] Nathaniel KIDDER (Cont'd.) [1]
Hi Marilyn, No problem. I occasionally make these "genealogy mistakes" myself. I won't be staying on the computer this morning, but I'll take a look for him tomorrow. I did see a Nathaniel KIDDER who went to California, and I'll try to find him again. (My "KIDDER book" on CD is not "searchable" on my present computer. 13. [GEN-NYS] Erie Canal Lock records [1]
To those seeking records concerning ancestors who were lock tenders or captains of vessels who used the Erie Canal or other waterways where tolls were paid, would be to check with Historical Societies in communities where locks were located or a local historian. Another avenue would be to check with libraries or museums along the canal routes and see if their collections contain any lock records of either lock tenders or records of the use of the canal. The state archives in Albany is another p
