1. RICHMOND-CRADDOCK-MCCAIG [1]
I am tracking the three family names listed. Agnes Richmond, born June 8, 1858. Her father was in the British Army, posted to India after her birth, and took his whole family with him to India. She married a Henry Craddock on June 8, 1876, who was also in the army, and bore him 7 children. He died in the mid 1890's, and she remarried a Robert McCaig, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and bore him 5 children. Date of their marriage unknown, but believed to be in the mid to late 1890's. All but one s

3. Re: Abingdon in Berkshire/Oxfordshire? NEWSTEAD 1887 [1]
Hi Astrid! For serious genealogical investigations you can safely assume Abingdon to be in Berkshire. All this 1970's and later fiddling with historic boundaries was only done to confuse you poor folk overseas. I've even been told that Berkshire itself no longer exists but I hope that's a malicious falsehood. Seriously, though, we in Wiltshire had the same problem in reverse with Berkshire "stealing" some of our villages. Some rectification has been made, though, and the smallest County, Rutland has no

Dear Jim, I found the below reference in an antiques book I own, entitled "Kovels' Know Your Antiques", published 1981, ISBN - 0 517 545012 . "Pot Lids The Pratt factory was the most famous of the English firms that made multicolored pot lids. These were china tops that were used on commercial soap, cosmetics, and moustache wax boxes. The lids became very popular with collectors, and are often framed and hung as a group. F. and R. Pratt Company made the lids in Fenton,England during the

I am seeking information on a home for the mentally retarded that was situated in Witham. One of my relatives was left there circa 1913 when his parents emmigrated to Canada. I would like to find the name of the home and i presume that he also died there where would he have been buried. Are there any records of these places and are they accessible. He was as far as i know still alive in 1949. Hoping there is someone out there with a good knowledge of Essex who can help me. Richard Merry
13. Re: Occupation plater [1]
Colin, Our references have two definitions:- 1) A worker in the textile industry who operated the machine which laid the fabric flat in uniform folds of any length that was required. 2) A shipyard worker who fitted heavy protective armour plate to naval ships. As you say that the person in question was from Birmingham, which isn't real close to the sea then I would be inclined to go for definition number one. 21. RE: Saint Clements Dane. [1]
Hi Jan, Just by the font, I reckon:)) St. Clement Danes is a church in the City of Westminster, and is the St.Clements associated with the "oranges and lemons say the bells of...". There has been a church on the site since about the 9th C, but the present church was rebuilt in c.1955 from the remains that were gutted in 1941. It is best known as the RAF church, and contains many memorials to RAF, Commonwealth and American military pilots killed during the 2nd world War. As far as I remember, the church
