THE AMERICAN WAR. ------------ Captain MAXWELL O'SULLIVAN, attached to the 88th Regiment, and a native of your city, died at Fort California, in the neighbourhood of Washington, on Sunday last. It appears that his regiment was among those which penetrated as far as Manassas, during the month of March last, on which occasion men and horses suffered dreadfully owing to the miserable condition of the roads, and the inclemency of the weather. ON Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock a charge of shot fired from some of the adjacent fields entered the dwelling-house of Mr. Murphy, 11, Audley-place, through one of the front windows, destroying four panes of glass, also seriously damaging a valuable bookcase. Grains of shot were found among the books. Providentially no person was in the room at the time ; if there had been, it is more than probable they would have met instant death. --The Cork Examiner, 15 April 1862 - - -
4. Registration outside your "home" Registration District? [1]
In the birth and death registration system established in Ireland in 1864, was there any obligation to register such births and deaths in the official Registration District for the location converned, or could these events be registered anywhere at the convenience of whoever was doing the registering? To give a specific example, some relatives of mine lived close to the boundary between Registration Districts - could they have decided to tun left rather than right when setting out to make registrations? I would like to thank Dennis and Cathy for printing the old newspaper articles. I research and print local county newspaper articles and post to our county list. The old newspaper articles, items of interest, obit's are hard to read, as many of them were put on microfilm in the 1960s -- 1970s. The newspapers were not in great shape when they microfilmed them back then. In my case the microfilm machines are old and take some maneuvering to use. I find the old articles interesting and it gives you a

Hello list, I've updated my website with not only my own family information, but also some data that I've put together to hopefully help others. Here's what you'll find. 1. Of course my family info with copies of documents such as those that I found at the National Archives in DC in my great great grandfather Louis KIRCHER's (born in Weinsberg, Wurttemberg) Civil War Pension files. Included in those papers are sworn statements made by friends to aid in the pension eligibility research. 2. I

A BOAT accident occurred ysterday evening at Queenstown, which, very fortunately, did not end fatally. As the Albert, railway steamer, was about leaving the pier at Queenstown to meet the half-past four train from Passage, a boat belonging to the Hawke, guardship, crossed her bows for the purpose of entering the dock near the Club-house. The steamer was at the time put in motion, and ran into the centre of the boat, capsizing it and its occupants. These were two officers and fo

From the Tyrone Constitution, issue dated November 29, 1844: ============================================ MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT.--GIBRALTAR, NOV. 16. --Again this week the painful duty devolves on us to record another distressing accident, which happened in the forenoon of Wednesday last (the 13th), by the sinking of a boat in the bay ; but as in this case the unfortunate sufferers were almost all our own country- men, belonging to a detachment of artillery on their way to Corfu, by the troop-ship Apollo, i

I have followed with interest the discussion of the value (or lack thereof) of Dennis's postings. I have to say that reading the excerpts online may be a needle in a haystack way of finding possible ancestral connections, but if I know, for example, that I have an ancestor Bartholomew O'Brien from Youghal and a name similar to that shows up in the Cork Examiner with an address, mention of a court date, a family member or any miscellaneous info from the excerpt , it gives me a place to start looking. I ha

AMERICAN MAILS--IRISH PACKET STATION ---------- The unprecedented rapidity with which the mails received by the Africa were transmitted to London, affords a signal example of what can be effected by the Government when it has thought right to make arrangements for the speedy communication of intelligence, and at the same time shows what little weight should be attached to the excuses which are sometimes made to account for the delay to which the public
