Are not Kantons the same as the Province spoken of? (That is my question.) On my map, Grimm is in the Kanton of Balzer, just across the line (north) from the Kanton of Kamenka. Also, Grimm is the "sub" name of Lesnoi Karamysch. Don Loose Warren, Mich. Thank you very mucyh Ethel, I found out from Steven Grau, that the 2 Anschuetz families are not one and the same. One went to S Africa, one to USA. I saw the article below from 1919 - where Carl Anschuetz explains that they were farmers from Russia. later, in other newspaper articles, I notice that the grandchildren say that Carl was a German who came and opened a bank in USA.... glossing over several generations, ie German farmers from Russia.... thank you for posting the article below, because I am su

I've examined a booklet entitled "Index to Stumpp Maps' and cannot find any of the villages listed in the request. The closest to Bedrykowce I could find is a Bedriks Khutor in the Caucasus, located on map 2, quadrant C5. I could not find any entries similar to the other villages. Thank you, Jorge, it is very helpful, and I am pleased that there were Volga-Germans who had a preference for Brazil and Argentina. (Incidently, I travelled to Commodore Rivadavia in 1978 to write articles about the Boers who fled /migrated there after their defeat by the British after the Anglo-Boer War. Also farmer-settlers, sheep farmers....I was like turning the clock backwards...fascinating...meaning Afrikaaner Patriarchs in the Patagonia - I spent 3 months in Argentina.) Vera South Africa > Dear

Vera, There were a number of reason how the GR's ended up in South America even though they may have intended to go to North America. The first if money. At times it was considerably cheaper to go to South America even though it is a longer voyage. The second a probably most significant reason was that they couldn't get into North America. During the time when Ellis Island was operating those that couldn't get in because of physical problems often went to South America. The ships made a number of port
