I've discussed the "Gulag-History" book by Anne Appelbaum, which was meant
to have been the most comprehensive history study to that date - some
couple of years ago.
Now 2 new books have been published:

It is interesting that now Russians are coming to grips with this abhorent
subject. (1 author Russian, 1 author Polish). And the reviewer/authors are
still battling with the fact that until Germans, Russia has not apologised

Hello,
This is great information. I'm still looking for the deportation records on my cousin's great-great grandparents, my great grandfather Adam Metzler's first cousin. During the Second World War my cousin's (he is 24) great-great-grandmother, Amalia, wife of Alexander Metzler, was sent to Kazakhstan, but his grandmother and great-grandmother were sent to Siberia. Eventually after the War they were able to join Amalia Metzler in Kazakhstan, where the family stayed until emigrating to Germany in 2000.
My grandfather, Heinrich Keil immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1912
from Mueller, Russian. He was born Dec. 25, 1888. His mother is listed as
Lissbeth (I think) Niedens and his father as Frederick Keil. I don't have
any other info on that. I was told that the rest of his family probably
stayed in Russia. If anyone has any contact to these names, would you let
me know. I would very much like to hear from you.
Thank you
Carol

I thought it might be an interesting thread if everyone stated the nickname
of their Volga village.
Josefstal was also called "Schwab kuhtor", which means farm of Schwab.
Even though the village was officially formed in 1852, Church records show
people were being born in "Schwab kuhtor" in 1850.
Anyone else?

There are several villages whose Russian name starts off with the pronper noun "Umet" -
The noun "Umet" means:
a) Coaching inn - stagecoach stopover
b) A Khutor in the Steppes
"Khutor" has several connotations from farm to hamlet,
meaning maybe a farming community, might be owned by one main owner with other farmers
living and renting land there.

Greetings,
I wanted to pass along information on SKYPE, an internet phone service. It uses your computer and the internet to make phone calls. Just moments ago I talked with my brother in Tokyo, the connection was clear and instantaneous, (I was calling from Kansas). Best of all it was FREE.
I set up the program and hardware (plugged in and set up microphone) in less than a half hour. The degree in difficulty was between easy to moderate.
Both parties have to have the software installed.

The problem with this is of all the talks we have heard on records, very few
mention the family lists...which leads me to believe that although some
survived, most did not.
Or...they just have not been found.
At any rate, we just do not have access to these family lists. But we do
have access to Church books and census records.

Vera,
Thanks for the clarification, so the lists sent to the Volost were just
taken from the same civil or adminstrative records we have previously
discussed. And what was recorded in the civil or adminstrative records
varied tremendously over the years and from village to village. And in the
case of Josefstal the records appear to be very detailed with complete
lists of births, deaths and marriages. The copies of these records sent to
the Volost could be another source of information if the original
