He had three brothers, Anton and Bernard, and a sister Angella who stayed in Germany. He had a brother Basil in Brooklyn, NY. He died in Springfield, OHIO August 1938. 6. Re: [Ger-Als] Hambach Province [1]
Could Elsag be Elsass? In German script, the double-S is a separate character(_), and is sometimes misread as a different letter. That would place Hambach in Alsace. I have found it to be a great help in finding villages throughout Europe It brings back data on close spelling matches so if you haven't gotten the name just right you still get the results. I tried Hambach and got a lot of hits for various places in Germany and Austria (Plus some that you can ignore) Hope this is helpful to you. Laura > [Original Message] > From: Harold Mathia > To:
8. Re: [Ger-Als] Hambach Province [1]
It must be " Waldhambach " " Diemeringen " Repperts were at first important glasmakers: the first one is Conrad Reppert born around 1614 and died in 1689 in Rosteig / Alsace. It' s in the north of Alsace near " La Petite Pierre " ( before L|tzelstein). Children born in Rosteig were christening in Waldhambach. Diemeringen had its own parish. 10. Re: Saareinsberg and Luneville [1]
Hello, Could anyone tell me where in 1902 or now is Saareinsberg and Luneville? The reason is 1902 my grandfather Clemens Hauck came to the US on the ship manifest it says he came from Luneville. he was born in Alsace-Lorraine 1871. Went to Springfield, (Springfield Township, Clark County) Ohio and remained there the rest of his life, which ended in 1938. His wife Lena (Magdalena Kusss) and first three of their children came to the US 1903, that manifest says they came from Saareinsberg. They both

12. Re: [GERMAN-ALSATIAN] Niederbracker & name variations, Bas-Rhin [1]
Every tidbit of information helps. Thank you. As to the pronunciation of the name, I would say that no person who is now living ever heard her say her name herself. It's questionable whether any person now living ever heard it pronounced by anyone who had heard her say it. I am only acquainted with one descendant, who was separated from his birth family and only found out two years ago that this is his ancestry. I found an Ann Niederbr|cker the right age in the 1860 census of Franklin County, Missour
13. [GERMAN-ALSATIAN] Niederbracker & name variations, Bas-Rhin [1]
The IGI states that Anna NEIDERBRACKER, wife of Henry STIRTZ, was born in Bas-Rhin. This is the only place I find any specific birthplace listed; otherwise, just "Germany." My questions are, if she really was born in Bas-Rhin, where in Bas-Rhin was she born, and which of the spelling variations are possible for Alsace/Elsa_? On the 1925 census of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Anna's parents' names are given as Karl NIEDERBRACKER and Mary SLOTMAN, and it states that they were married in "Germany". I realize
14. Re: [GERMAN-ALSATIAN] Niederbracker & name variations, Bas-Rhin [1]
Re: "My questions are, if she really was born in Bas-Rhin, where in Bas-Rhin was she born, and which of the spelling variations are possible for Alsace/Elsa_?" Bas Rhin ("lower Rhine") is an administrative department within Alsace; it lies downstream, i.e. north, of Haut Rhin ("upper Rhine"). The question about where, exactly, she was born is very appropriate but will take research. A large proportion of residents of Bas Rhin speak German and are ethnically Germanic. Strasbourg is the major city of Bas Rhi

16. [GERMAN-ALSATIAN] THEIS, HANSEN ALsace or Luxembourg > Iowa USA [1]
I do not know which great grandparent (Catherine HANSEN or Theodore THEIS) came from Alsace and which came from Luxembourg. I do not know much about their early years. They immigrated (we believe independently of each other) about 1850-1858. Catherine probably came with several family members, including John Peter (who was a saloon keeper - he had been a prisoner of war in Andersonville prison during the American Civil War) , Nicholas, and Michel or Michael (who probably settled in Mobile AL). Nicholas

21. [Ger-Als] MAYER [1]
Hi, I am still desperately seeking information on my great-great-grandfather, Alexander Mayer, who was born in the Alsace-Lorrain area on November 21, 1823. Our info on his parents is conflicted. On one document, his parents are Rupert & Frances Mayer; on other documentation they are Alex & Geneva Mayer. We also have info that indicates he had 2 sisters, Theresa and Marie. Alex eventually ended up in Ontario, Canada, where he married Susanna Heimler in 1857, and they had 7 children. He died September 29,

In 1940, I was baptized by Rev. E. Maclay Gearhardt, DD at Luther Memorial Church in Erie, PA. Of course, he is long-dead; however, that church would have all kinds of information about him since he was there past retirement. The address is Luther Memorial Church, 225 west 10th Street, Erie, PA 16501. Edie Treiber Descendent of Pierre B|chi of schoenbourg
24. Re: [Ger-Als] MAYER [1]
I did a look up in the Alsace Emigration Book. There may be a connection between tinsmiths and glassmakers. You see, glassmakers often decorated their work with metals. My family/extended family used gold quite a bit. (St. Louis Crystal and Burgun(d), Cie, & Walter late 1500s - late 1700s) I have not reached the M group of glassmaking families yet. I am researching all of the glassmaking families we have identified from the Eastern part of France that went back and forth between France and Germany as a I b
25. Re: [Ger-Als] MAYER [1]
There were Mayer glassmaking families in that area. Sometimes it was spelled Mayer sometimes Meyer depending upon who was doing the writing. Spelling was not standardized until the middle of the 1900s. So I would check variant spellings including Maier. I show an Alexandre Meyer coming from St. Amarin in the Alsace area Aug 7, 1850 leaving Alsace. This may fit your family. If it does I would contact the records section for St. Amarin in France. If this looks like your Alexander (Alexandre is the Frenc
