I have been following the discussion & questions about Antipas & Col. Antipas
Gilman. I hope this will help clear things up - this is the biography in
"the History of Gilmanton" by Daniel Lancaster, 1845, page 236 for Col.
Antipas Gilman.
"Col. Antipas Gilman was a son of Antipas Gilman of Brentwood, and Lydia
Thing his wife, and was born in Brentwood, May 6, 1730. He was a man of

John,
Searching through my notes, I find that Col. Antipas Gilman's sister, Deborah
Gilman, who married Winthrop Gilman, had a son Antipas, born October 2, 1769 in
Rockingham County, New Hampshire. I have no record of any children, though. Does
that help at all?

You will recall that the Gilmans shown in Lorraine in the 1850 census
were from Connecticut. Your Lucy may yet prove to have been of that line,
rather than the NH/VT line. I would like to know two things -- and maybe
never will: Why were John and Lucy in Lorraine in 1860, and where did they
meet?
I am assuming that this John was the son of Alvin Place of Hinesburg, VT.
He would have had cousins by the dozens nearby. I've been wrong before,
though.

Sorry! I forgot that you were not subscribed to GILMAN-L and didn't copy
you in on some of the exchanges.
Bill Gilman set me straight re Col. Antipas, that he was the son of the
other Antipas. However, the good colonel decided that he didn't want any kid
of his carrying that name around with him so I had to go looking for another
one. It looks as though Winthrop and Deborah named a son Antipas who would
fit as the father of the one in Hinesburg.
As pointed out in another memo,

Thanks a lot for the full bio.
This has the first mention I've seen of the migration to Vermont.
"When he moved to Walden, VT, to be near his children."
I hope that all the time I'm investing tracking down this Antipas
will prove worth while. Right now, it is just a guess that Lucy Gilman's
John Place was the son of Alvin. However, with Alvin Place and Antipas
Gilman listed on the same page of the 1850 census, they HAD to have been
close neighbors, and Alvin's son
Anyone know which Gilman married Marietta Shackford and if they had any
children?

Just to complicate all these messages about Antipas Gilman I wonder if anyone
has a suggestion/idea on the following:
John Anthony Needles Chu Chu Gilman b. Aug 1777 in Exter, Rochingham Co, NH
signed a letter of Denization in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii on 9th Oct 1846 and
married Harriett Kawahaea in Hawaii and raised 5 children with her.
Was the above "John Gilman" related to Antipas or was he possibly an Indian
that took the Gilman name? Any ideas?
PLEASE HELP!
