Johanna for a number of English versions of the feminine - Joan, Joanna, Jean, Jane, etc. The variety of forms of girls' names makes it difficult to be sure what the English would have been. For example I have an ancestor shown as Anna but it's a Latin entry so her name in English might have been Ann(e) or Anna.

5. Hereford Family History [1]
Just saw a programme (BBC .."Country file") which traced an Australian family back 24 generations . which really impressed me , as I can only manage 14. Until, that is .......... It dawned on me they were talking about Hereford cows . Are we a bit speciesist about out ONS's - shouldn't we include animals as well ? Steve Tanner
6. Re: [G] uk civil reg. [1]
Hi, Does anyone know if there is a BMD website where I could trace the unknown children of the Wells family without going through all the Wells from 1911? My Grandmother-in-Law Nellie Moist married John Anderson Stenson Wells in 1908 (Cardiff, but moved around) and had three children who lived to adulthood but she said she had 'two or three children who died in the bath whilst the nurse was looking after them'. I'd like to find these children and what really happened! so is there any website that I cou

Steve Tanner asked: Could the lister who mentioned the URL for the site (whose name I've forgotten) which offers searches on the GRO between 1861-1920 please repeat ? (Basically similar to 1837online , only cheaper for some kinds of search) Steve It may be https://www.familyrelatives.org/treequest/jsp/customer/index.jsp you have in mind. I am wondering if I missed a reply on the Forum about the problems since the 'This email has been scanned by Netintelligence' appeared on the bottom of every email - to read these ( I have the digest) I have to click on attachments to read each email - but I now do not get a header on any of the messages and if I try and reply to an individual I have to type is their email address myself (I can reply to GOONS- L@rootsweb.com) I use Pegasus email manager and have never had this problem in the passed -
10. Making news [1]
Having just posted a comment on the Zoominfo topic, I got to thinking about unusual ways of making news. Well one of 'my lot' has certainly found an unusual way of spending the run-up to the festive season. I have two good friends helping me with my Cullingworth ONS. Pat is my husband's first cousin - one he lost touch with very many years ago. We found each other via a genealogy website and are now very good friends. The other, Rita (nee Cullingworth), is a lady with whom I corresponded for a short time ar

Peter I have used freefind http://www.freefind.com/ on the Manchester & Lancashire FHS pages www.mlfhs.org.uk which offers a free facility. This has a discreet freefind tag on the search box and adds a couple of "related" external links to the results but nothing too distracting . I have searched to no avail. Is there a FONS website? If not, does a member have a spare copy of the leaflet? I've never received one, and would like to make use of their facilities. Hello Shelagh. Does it matter how much profit is made , Petrol companys make huge profit but none of us stop buying it. What you have to decide do you get value for money. I joined Ancestry 8 months ago . I can assure you with regards my research it has been the best buy ever and have not regretted it one bit. When I look back to my journeys to Portugal Street and St Catherines how much easier it now. Anybody doing a one-name study their first buy if they can afford it is get Ancestry. Jim Isard

Hi Don >>I was wondering if members of this list had noticed, with the listings from the 1984-2003 BMD records on Ancestry, you get the details even if the name you are searching is the mothers maiden name, not the persons surname.<< You will also get examples where the surname appears as a forename too. *Very sorry* to lose you Phil. It was noble of you to offer the research purely gratis. It seems there are folk here who are (i) insufficiently qualified to undertake an ONS _via a computer_ (ii) unwilling to be told by those who are and (iii) too self-centred by far. I'm also not at all happy with the committee (as I've voiced some months ago) but I've learned that no man-made institution is totally satisfactory. So do what you feel right *for you* and should you ever need/wish to see how things

Why use back-up software? External hard drives are now cheap and easy to use and files can be copied across with drag and drop. I have an Iomega 80GB external hard drive connected via a USB cable. I keep all my data separate from program files - programs can always be reinstalled from the original CDs or downloaded from the Internet. Dear All, This is the final call for Bridge and Blean R.D.'s Marriage Challenges. I currently have 138 for Blean and 134 for Bridge - so not massive. If you have not done so, please send me your people for your registered GOONS name(s) asap - I need to get this sorted and am rather busy at work to the end of this week. Umm - that's a bit of a mis-information. I have been ill for 3.5 weeks with one "lurgey" after another and am actually looking forward to returning to work, hopefully tomorrow. As you
