1. [WW1] Reserve Cavalry Regiment [1]
I have been asked by a colleague to give him some advice about researching his great-grandfather who died in the Great War. I have the CWGC & Soldiers Died details and so I know that he was: Thomas Birtwell MORRIS Pte 310315 Tank Corps (formerly 48574 Reserve Cavalry Regiment) died 06/11/18 What was the Reserve Cavalry Regiment? Does this imply pre-war service or was this a wartime formation? Any advice on this matter would be gratefully received. Regards, Ken *** Researching the 9th Battalion, King'

5. [WW1] Iain Kerr [1]
Hi there, I am shocked to hear of the passing of Iain Kerr. I corresponded with him last year and he was so helpful and informative. I still have his letters in my e-mail Holds. I shall not forget him. May he rest in Peace. 6. Re: [WW1] Territorial numbering for the Dorsetshire Regt [1]
Tom: Thanks for your reply - and yes, I hadn't initially considered that the renumbering had spanned ALL of the 4th (T.F.) Bn. I've looked at the SDITGW data now, and did note that there were casualties with T.F. block numbers with the Service Battalions. However, might that have been Territorials who were subsequently posted to the Service Battalions? Dunno. I'll have to be patient and see what the medal roll/s reveal. 9. Re: [WW1] GORHAM- Burnt Records [1]
Margaret - WO363/G905 is the correct "main series" burned records film for "Gorham, Frederick". - Cant quickly check (online) the misfile WO363 or the "first series" WO364 reference which you give, for reasons explained at the link below, but there should almost certainly be a further three WO364 film references - again, explained here > http://www.btinternet.com/~prosearch/tomspage31.html It's only fair to mention that this is an easy "mistake" to make if you aren't familiar with the workings of the WO363
10. [WW1] 13/18pr Ammunition [1]
Dear list Once again i ask for your assistance in identifying some abbreviations which appear in a 1WW diary, it states that shrapnel shell was designated as "AC" and High Explosive was known as "ACx" but unfortunately the writer does not give the meaning of the actual abbreviations. I am at a loss as to the definition of the two abbreviations myself, so i ask for your help in solving this problem. Derek J. Driscoll Researching 1st South Midland Bde/240 Bde RFA [TF] 1908-1919
11. Re: [WW1] Mercantile Marine Medal [1]
Iain, The British War and Victory Medal rolls are combined. So, there is only one roll to look at. The only way to find out if there is any further information is, of course, to have a look at it. It MIGHT do but I doubt if it will: Although the rolls for the 1914 and 1914-1915 Stars to the Royal Artillery do sometimes show additional infromation, the one for the British War and Victory Medals usually do not do so. The important thing to remember here is that he did not, in fact, change service: He remained
12. Re: [WW1] names not on memorials [1]
Simply because it was up to relatives to put forward names of their family members who had paid the ultimate sacrifice. By the time many memorials were built people had moved away from the district, and others appeared there. There were often no strict rules about who could or could not appear on the memorial, to avoid relative's susceptibilities. Therefore some men appeared on more than one memorial - others were missed off entirely. The local parish or town council would make it known that they intended

Iain, Are you interpreting RFA as Royal Field Artillery or Royal Fleet Auxiliary? 14. [WW1] World War One Navy Question [1]
Hi and thank you for having me. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to military research so please pardon anything that might look silly. I've just recently located a record of my step-grandfather's father's death aboard the USS Brooklyn in 1917. His rank was "oiler" according to the record I found on ancestry.com but I don't really know what that means. What I'm trying to find out is how to access any further military records about this man. For the longest time we didn't know his real name bec

16. RE: [WW1] East Surrey Regt [1]
John, Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I seem to have confused myself with the term 'block transfer'. I agree with you I should have said 'bulk transfer' which, under the circumstances would have made much more sense. I know that there were other men from the East Surreys who transfered to the 9th King's Liverpools and they had numbers which did not fall into the 241*** & 242*** block. I assume therefore that these men may have transferred at the same time but could have been regulars or have trans

Hello list, 2 queries today ! As mentioned before, my grandad's cousin - William George PEALE - enlisted in the Welsh Regt., & said he was born in Wales, when he was actually born in Folkestone, Kent. He said he was born in Quarterbach & Dave Hanson (thanks, Dave !!) suggested looking at the village memorials along the Amman valley to see if his name was on one of them. Well, as my parents now live about an hour away from Ammanford, where William enlisted, they took a drive through the villages & found a

Tom wrote, "I cannot think of any circumstance under which RFA service could ever qualify for the Mercantile Marine Medal " Could RFA stand for Royal Fleet Auxiliary in this instance? I'm not sure at what date the RFA was formed, so this suggestion could be rubbish, but if it did exist at that time, its navy ships were manned by civilians. I'm ready to be shot down in flames. Hello All Lister, I'm researching my Grandfathers time in WW1 and know he served with both the Royal Warwickshire Reg (2nd Battalion) and at some time later in the war served with the 2nd/4th Battalion, Royal Berkshires. He was wounded at Gouzeacourt Wood but when, I do not know. Is there any one out there who can shed light on this place? I believe there was an engagement there refered to as the 'Battle of Gouzeacourt Wood'. Any info mosy helpful as is any info on either Regiments movements in WW1. Reg
