1. [WW1] South Lancs Regiment [1]
I have been trying for some years to trace the WW1 record of Herbert Cyril BAYNE, but without result. As far as I know, he joined the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1914 and falsified his age because he was only 16. He was serving in India in November 1919, but I know for a fact that no units of the Lancs Fus. Regiment were in India during the War, but some South Lancs units were. I suspect that the Lancs Fus caught up with him and discharged him, and he joined the South Lancs in 1916. The Lancs Fus Museum has

By means of a brief reply, a cavalry unit based in Canterbury would most likely have been at the Cavalry Barracks, Canterbury (that was its name!), which disappeared under a housing estate in the 1960s.

And any other details, please. Stella, The full name of the publication is "Soldiers Died in the Great War". The Roll of Honour - "Soldiers Died in the Great War" was originally an HMSO publication in 81 volumes and reprinted by J B Hayward and Son. Essentially it was compiled from the consolidated lists of war dead

10. RE: [WW1] WW1 Casualty Numbers [1]
Alan I can't comment on the actual Scottish losses but to my knowledge it was the Russians on the eastern front who suffered the largest no of War casualties from the allied nations. The French suffered enormous losses and the Australians lost almost 1 in 5 KiA or DoW (though not the highest in numbers was about 20%of the active Australian force). 14. [WW1] 7th Bedfordshires & 54th Brigade & Stretcher Bearers [1]
I am a new subscriber to this list and am researching for a biography of Pte Chris Cox V.C of the 7th Bedfordshire Regiment. He won the VC at Aichet le Grande in March 1917. He was wounded in May 1917 which resulted in him being sent home and he was subsequently unfit for front line service. I have already done a lot of research, which was started when Cox's daughter found two suitcases of memorabilia in the loft which her father had kept. I have a copy of the War Diaries for the 7th Bedfordshires so I kn

17. Re: [WW1] Lt. Waldegrave Frank Sydney Kell [1]
"The History of the 1/5th Battalion, the Suffolk Regiment", by A. Fair and E.D.Wolton, states (p. 117) : Kell, W.F.S. 2nd Lieut. d.of w. 23-7-17 Palestine There is a mention of Lt. Kell on p. 70, indicating that he was killed on the night of the 27th (not the 23rd) of July "while acting as Brigade Bombing Officer" during a raid on Umbrella Hill. Except for the four-day date discrepancy, this confirms the CWGC entry. Bruce Marsh (Madison, Wisconsin) -- son of a 1/5th Suffolk soldier wh

By NW Hospital , I presume you think its a north west hospital We have in our town the North Wales Hospital. Unfortunately it was called Asylum in those years as it was a mental hospital. Whenever I see N.W. H. I think of the old North Wales Hospital. As far as I know , it was not used as a convalescent hospital. Good luck finding . Peter Photos of the Somme & Flanders at War Sites. 19. [WW1] Harry Parker Tasker [1]
Hi, Harry was my Gt Grandfather who was killed in WW1, he was in the West Yorkshire Regiment and when he was killed he was 44 years of age. During the operations in the Arras-Albert sectors in the spring of 1918 he was severely wounded and after having his leg amputated hi died in Hospital at Doullens 20th May 1918. He seems to of been old to be in such fierce fighting, he was a Private so I was wondering why he was sent to the Front at that age - was this normal for WW1? Regards Julie Perth WA

24. [WW1] SERVICE ABBREVIATION [1]
I'm not having very much luck finding the information I am looking for. I have a WWI photo of a distant Liverpool cousin in military garb showing a shoulder patch with a cross with a ring around it and below the emblem the letters that most likely are EBR but may be SBR. Whether or not this is preceded by other letters can not be ascertained. I presume he was in the medical services. If somebody can direct me to site with a listing of UK military abbreviations, I would be greatly appreciative. Al
25. [WW1] New Subscriber - BENNETT [1]
Hello everyone, I'm new to this list and thought I'd put forward my interests with regard to WW1. My husband's great grand father's name was James BENNETT who was originally from Lancashire. He came to Australia to sign up for the war, leaving his wife and daughter at home in England. I know that he went AWOL whilst over in England for training to visit his family before serving in France. After the war, he returned to Australia and had his wife and daughter join him. What I would like to find out is t
