1. RE: [GUS-REEB] Our own REEB family - pronunciation [1]
Hi Virginia, I am very well acquainted with many Rape cousins in Union County, NC. Most of them still pronounce the name just as it sounds in English with a long A. I do know of at least one family who did change the spelling of their name and pronunciation to Rapp. You may be aware that when he did his books on the Laney and Funderburk families Dr. Guy Funderburk did acknowledge Mr. Dowd Laney Rape in one of his books as a descendant of Charles Rape, son of Henry Rape. Dowd always gave me the impression t
2. RE: [GUS-REEB] Our own REEB family - pronunciation [1]
"I wanted to hear his ideas about how the German name Reeb could equal our Americanized spelling of the name as Rape etc. Werner speaks with a fairly strong German accent but was able to make it perfectly clear that REEB is pronounced as we Americans pronounce RAPE." I'm still having trouble with the pronunciation - is it more like the word rape (long a), or is it more like ropp (which I have always heard was how it was pronounced in Union County, NC). Virginia (from Rape/Funderburk branch) -----Orig

It is nice to hear from you too. Although I had not been told who may be buried in some of the unmarked graves in the cemetery on Pigeon Mountain I had just taken it for granted that possibly the first graves there would have been for Mary (Hancock) Rape and the little girl of Archibald and Mary, who died in childhood. Just yesterday, I talked with my oldest first cousin of my Rape family, Billie Lee Cagle, who lives in Oklahoma but did make a trip to Walker County, Georgia so he could look at the cemetery.

John, It was very nice to hear from you. I think of you often and wonder how you are doing. I have not done very much lately on my family tree. We have been very busy with many other things but I need to get back to working on all of the data. I need to get all of my files organized better so I can find everything more easily. It is always good to hear from you and read all the info that you post. I do not know how you can remember so much. You are truly an amazing person and I am glad
5. Re: [GUS-REEB] Our own REEB family [1]
John, I am always glad to hear from you or any of our cousins out there. I have been quiet for many reasons, one of which is my health, that of my son and my brother. We are better but need much prayer. I do love hearing your post when someone ask a question, you are always willing to share your knowledge and time. I have done little or no research lately, I would love to and will again when I am able. I hope you get the response you are looking for on this list. I only wish I had something to share.
6. Re: [GUS-REEB] Our own REEB family [1]
Hello John and cousins: I have been very quiet as of late due to taking a different job that has been very demanding of my time. Many of you understand this as well. My ancestors took the name Raph from the name Reeb. I am most interested in the lives of David Raph/Reb/Rape/Reeb (born 1806) and his brother Peter (born 1804). They were sons of Catharine Barbara Heiny and Heinrich Reeb. David and his wife Margaret died young orphaning their children near Madison, Wisconsin. I would like to

Harlan, Good to hear from you again. As I have told you in the past, I too have been interested in learning more about David Reb/Rape/Reph/Raph and his orphaned children who I had learned about years ago after hearing from Patti Schuknecht about her ancestor Peter Reb/Rape/Reph/Rapp and his relocation from Northampton to Mercer County, PA then on to Dane County, Wisconsin. It took a few years for me to learn exactly who those orphaned children had belonged to. We now know about two of them but their siblin

Thank you, John. That makes it a lot clearer. I too miss hearing from Werner. Just a little history here. A few years ago, I was diligently working on the St. Clair County, Illinois Reeb family trying to put together as much information as possible on that family. Of course we did not know at the time whether they might be kin to our families or not but I suspected that if they were the relationship might be very distant as that family has a long history of being Catholic as opposed to our family's long history of being Protestant. One day I received a
12. Our own REEB family [1]
I have noticed that there has been a significant drop in the quantity of communications on line in the REEB-ROOTS-L email list and also the Reeb.org and myfamily sites. I believe that this could be due to more than one cause including possibly my own behavior during the last couple of years. I admit that I had become less and less interested in the communications after the DNA study revealed that we were not one large REEB family but in fact were from completely un-related REEB ancestors. Years ago, after

Oh, I'm still here. The reason for my lack of active participation is that I've taken on the full time job of Grandmothering to an eight year old and a sixteen month old. It is wonderful to take a few precious minutes and see what others have taken the time to share. Have a great day. Lora
14. Re: [GUS-REEB] Our own REEB family [1]
Lora, The job of Grandmothering is the most important job in the world next to that of the mother but sometimes it is even more important. I don't know of very many intelligent adults who do not credit their grandmothers as their most favorite person and I can understand why. But you also are also very important to those of us who consider you our present representative of Margaret "Peggy" (Reap) File, your own many times great grandmother. For many years my only contact with a File family descendant was
15. Israel Rape [1]
Hi Elgin, Good to hear from you again. Your mention of Israel Rape reminded that two or three years ago Marshall Dickson sent me a copy of the grown children of Israel and Sarah Laney Rape. This is the same photo which Nell Norvell included in The Rape Family Tree but in much better condition. Since I am no longer in the City (San Francisco) I don't have as good of access to Walgreens where I could get this photo reproduced but in the future I may be able to get copies made for those who may be interested.
