Thank you Ronda for your reply. We are all thinned skinned at times. It is
hard not to be. Words are so sharp and seem so harsh, especially when we
meant well by replying to an E-Mail.
When you are on the phone or writing, one can not see the eyes of another,
the expressions from their body, one can only see words. E-Mails are great
in one way, they distribute information in a very timely manner, but you do
not get the full picture of the person who is sending or receiving the
message. Let us go
Well, here we go again. I am once again asking all subscribers to this list to please please let me know by way of a PRIVATE e-mail if I should refrain from posting to this list or responding to posts to the list. I am not going to get into a back and forth arguement as to whether my response to a recent post on the list offensive or not.
I would simply allow the list to go silent similar to the REEB-ROOTS list but I do not think that I should allow that to happen when many of you have been long
Hi Diann
Right now I do not know the answer to your question. I think that a good leader is necessary to get the cooperation needed from a group of people who are willing and able to dedicate their time and effort towards either publication of books or an association which could not be closed without an official election to do so. The organization and leadership of such an association would require real strong and dedicated leadership and membership by enough strong willed people who would not s
Please join me in welcoming Harvey Rape to the GUS-REEB List. I am only going to tell you that those of us descendants of Archibald Rape who was born 1810 in then Mecklenburg County (now Union) who was the first born son of John Rape , whom we affectionatly know as the "Arbor Builder," think of all of his other descendants as our close kin, whether we are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or more cousins. So Harvey is a close kin to some others of us on this list and therefore he is among his kin here.

It is my fear too that when I'm gone the volumes of information that I have so diligently collected to validate the origin/history of the family will be simply be 'tossed' away as an unwanted collection of papers and photos.
A fellow genealogists acquaintance has just recently published his fourth book on his and his wife's family genealogy. He had this planned for years and it is quite an accomplishment. He has now taken upon himself the task of publishing the data on other branches of the family tree a
Diann & Janet,
Both of you are very good genealogists and I beleive in the professional class. So believe me I do respect and agree that the family history should be published. What I think I am unsure of is when. By when, I am not asking for a specific date, week, month or even year. I know this is not very helpful. So I will try to explain my concerns.
Basically, I think a family history should include the descendants of a particular ancestor. In this case, both of you and I are part of
John, I recognize that you have been very busy, with much on your mind. I
will forgive your offensive prejudicial response to my question. I hope I can
enlighten you and dispel gypsy myths perpetuated by Hollywood, fairytales and
Cher. The word "gypsy" is a misnomer. Gypsies worldwide adopted the term
"Roma" instead, but Roma are not Romanian. Roma descend from ancient tribes of
India that spread across Europe, Middle East, America, worldwide. And yes,
Roma include some undesirables, same as

Rhonda,
As sad as it may be I must agree with you that some of the left behind grown children in many families have been known to dispose of their deceased parents genealogy collections the moment they get the opportunity by one swift toss into the trash.
Quite a few years ago after first learning that the wife of Gustavus Reeb was Anna Margaretha Stroh, I began to suspect that the Stroh/Straw family I had learned about living in Dauphin and Lebanon Counties, PA were possibly close kin to o
Harlan, I also have documented the history of the living and the past,

have passed on. By remembering and documenting what all our relatives went
through during their lives. I am writing about my life and hopefully
someone in my family will follow. I believe I have one Niece who may be
interested, maybe another. They are interested in their father's name and
I have helped them. Maybe they will help me. I am a good resear
Thanks Karen for sharing this obit. It is amazing how much information one
gets from the newspaper obit section.
I live in Rock Hill, SC, not far from you! I have roamed all over your area
doing research on my Rape line. I descend from John Rape the Arbor builder,
his son Henry R. Rape was my great grandfather.

Dear Diann,
Your email says it all for me. I couldn't have put this into better
words. You are absolutely correct the internet is not the way to
go. John has spent his life researching our Reeb family and has found new
cousins since the first book was published.
I will volunteer my assistance if John and others are willing to write an
updated book on our Reeb families. We can do this with John at the helm.
Any other volunteers?
Thanks so much,

Myka, I am happy to see you posting! I was in North Carolina a total of three times but one trip was back in 1960s when my wife and I were stationed at Charleston Air Force Base and one of my kid brothers who was then at Fort Bragg in the 82nd Airborne had come to visit us, so we drove him back to Fort Bragg. Then I was there for the Reeb-Rape reunions in 1985 and 1987. I stayed with Zimmer & Marge Rapp in Charlotte and Zimmer took me around on both visits to see all the important to Rape family hi
Myka,
My daughter-in-law just informed me that the term you used Romani-Gypsy would probably refer to Romania the country and the Gypsies there in. I suppose the reason for it not being reccomended for people to marry them would be due to the bad reputation of the Gypsies. If I understand correctly they have a reputation for stealing and even in the U.S. they often made themselves part of the traveling circuses and would be involved with the wierd acts such as the tallest man in the world, the
RE PETER RAPE'S TAVERN: Yes, Peter Rape's Tavern was often discussed in John
Osborn's diary, as was Peter's daughter Nancy (b ca 1774-1784). The tavern
was along Twelve Mile Creek, between Wesley Chapel Cemetery, where Peter Rape,
Sr. (b 1760 PA, d 1825 NC) is buried, and the Pleasant Grove Methodist
Arbor/campground. The Arbor was built by Peter's son John (b ca 1790), of whom
many of you descend, including John V. Reeb. This is in the Mineral Springs, NC

What a lovely memory for you, Aileen. The Arbor is awesome! There is
something special about those huge timbers, and the natural warmth of wood, that
makes me feel "connected" when I touch the timbers that were hewn & constructed
by our ancestor so long ago.

Oh! forgive me, I am so sorry for that mistake. John the Arbor builder was
my great great grandfather; I think that puts us in the same generation. I
would love to get with you some day and compare notes. The first time I
visited the Arbor in Mineral Springs I cried; that place is awesome. I was
able to take my mother and two of her sisters there for the big Sunday
service at camp meeting one year. They are all gone now so I would not take
anything for the memories of that day.

Hey Harvey,
I have cousins in MS also- lots in fact.
Mine are from Scott county MS (around Forest and Lake). Cyrus McDonald Rape
who died in the Civil War. his sons were 1. Jacob Nathaniel Rape who
married Bertha Amis and eventually settled in Moss Point, MS in 1900. I finally
found some of his descendants about the time of Katrina still down on the coast.
and 2. John Davis Rape that married Mrs. Beulah Ann (Simmons) Matthews (she
was living in Lauderdale county at the time of their marriage).
We need to write a book and I thought there was a good amount of interest -
then suddenly there was no interest at all. I would be willing to help but
I do not have the expertise that many of you have neither am I near enough
to the places where they lived. Anyone else have a better idea than a
book?? Rose Taylor (a Reeb/Rape) descendent/

The only idea I have is that perhaps if we appoint one of the grand children and tell them that we are choosing them to carry on the work of writing down the geneology material for their generation and then when they are old they need to appoint one of their offspri

Dear Gus-Reeb mailing list:
Thank you for the kind greetings when I joined this mailing list. Unfortunately, other than my own Reeb family I do not have a lot of knowledge to share regarding the Reeb surname, but I will eagerly read each post to the mailing list.

All I can say is that you are probably correct in his not appearing on the list. I am certain that I also had a curiosity about him one way or other however during the period of quite a few years exploring on the spelling of Rape I began to learn that so many of the RAPES who I would see turned out to not be German or Alsacian in their ethnicity.
For a minute, forget about our southern Rape family, the Butler County, PA Rape family, The Northampton County, PA Rape/Reph etc. family, and the Nort
