Sherry This question seems to have been around a long time and some people think Dennis Friend was not a trustworty source. I would have to find this book again to get the full story, but J. Henry Lea in his 1909 book, The Ancestry of Lincoln said on p. 108 (the only page I copied) that Nancy Sparrow was confused by some of the early biographers with Nancy Hanks. Nancy Sparrow married Charles Friend, brother of Jesse Friend, who married Polly Hanks (daughter of Joseph). In a footnote, Lea says "Charl

Many Thanks to Michelle Ule for forwarding this information to me. This question has come up several times lately and is a warning to all of us genealogists. PRIVACY AND THE WEB by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG Would you post personal information about your family -- like their birth dates and who they married and when -- on the local grocery store's bulletin board? Maybe there will be no more disasters in my family, we have had enough for one year. The latest is my only sister's husband, he had a massive stroke 2 weeks ago, and is in rehab now. He will be okay but t

Lynn, This same conversation is referenced in Rev. Wim. E. Barton's work "The Lineage of Lincoln", (Bobbs-Merrill, 1929) and the illegitimacy is seemingly substantiated by comments from Dennis friend, also noted in the book. I am new to the HANKS list and wondered if anyone is researching this line of HANKS (at bottom). I also noticed generetion 5 & 6 of a HANKS family in a previous post and was hoping somone could catch me up by resending privately if there were previous generations posted. Family stories say our line of HANKS is related to Nancy HANKS LINCOLN. Having heard this from more than one researcher, as well, I would like to see if it proves out. In the most recent edition of the Hanks Historical Review (Vol VIII, Iss 2; May 1998) there was an interesting article on the Abraham Hanks/Sarah Harper Theory on the Identity of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. I know that there are many of us out there that 1) want to lay claim to Abraham Lincoln ancestry and 2) want to really find out the identity of Nancy Hanks. Personally, though my family, like many, has their traditions about being related to Abraham Lincoln through Nancy Hanks, I would rather just find my anc

Ebenezer HANKS had a son named Marion Lyman Hanks, b. 27 May 1884 in Hanksville, Utah, however he died young on 14 January 1891. Ebenezer and his cousins Ephraim Knowlton Hanks and Sydney Alvarus Hanks were among the original Mormon Pioneers. Ebenezer and Ephraim both served in Co. E of the Mormon Battalion.
