2. Re: [HARRELL] Reuben HARRELL [1]
Melinda, My 2nd great grandfather was Ruben Jerome Harrell born in Claiborne TN in 1835. His older siblings and father, William Simpson Harrell b. 1795, were born in Wythe Co. VA. My Ruben (his spelling) migrated from TN to Buffalo, MO, and finally to TX. He served in the Union Army in MO. Ruben's grandfather was a John Harrell who married an Alice Lindsay. I have noticed the names Rueben and Jerome run through this line quite frequently. My great Uncle was a Jerome Harrell and my brother's midd

6. [HARRELL] O. Henry in Austin, TX with Joseph Harrell [1]
Today I was subbing for a HS English class that was reading "The Gift of the Magi". In order to quickly prepare for the lesson I "Googled" "William Sydney Porter". One of the sites of interest was: http://www.lsjunction.com/people/porter.htm and I was very surprised to find the following: "In 1884, Porter moved to Austin. For the next three years, where he roomed in the home of the Joseph Harrell family and held several jobs. It was during this time that Porter first used his pen name, O. Henry, said to b

11. Re: [HARRELL] Walk the walk [1]
Just a tidbit. There was a very hard time in Europe in the 1790s. The grain harvests were so poor that people were unable to afford the purchase of bread. We all should have heard the quote from Marie Antoinette about the situation in France about the population - "Let them eat cake." In my mother's family in Devonshire England there is a history of a possible uncle, Thomas Campion, a blacksmith from Ilsington [on the eastern side of the Devonshire Moor} who was hanged in August of 1795 for his role in
12. [HARRELL] Ice Age: [1]
It appears that, had not been for the mini Ice Age, the Viking Harralds would have played a large part in the settlement of North America! A Norwegian sea captain named Herjolf, a relative of Fair Hair Harrald, discoved New Foundland and Lief Erickson established a settlement there, however, it appears that the ports around Greenland and Iceland froze and shipping was stopped.. The Newfoundland colony died out, as did the settlement in Greenland... G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingd

Having watched a History Channel program on this, I'm sure you're right. Apparently there was a mini ice age somewhere between the early 'teens...that is 13/1400 up until almost the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. Anyone interested should try to locate/look up this program. Apparently a lot of history was changed by it. I last saw it probably no later than 8 months ago. 16. [HARRELL] Harrell Migration: [1]
Garland, I agree, I would have settled where the ox died too! But, I would not have eaten the other one! He could have very easily hewed a single ox yoke from a tree and raised a crop with one ox... Sure, he was strong... but there was no need to "kill" himself just to get a leittle further west! My ggrandfather was very strong but he killed himself when he threw a 300 pound hog over a fence on a bet!! G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.
17. Re: [HARRELL] Thomas HARRELLs [1]
> Donald Wrote in part: *In the 1800 US Census there was only ONE Thomas Harrell listed in Gates County, NC. However, he was listed as Thomas Harrell, SR. Thomas died in 1808 and in his will were named the following children: Elijah, Elisha, Edy, Rebecca, Mary, and Milley. There was an Elijah Harrell listed in the 1800 census in Gates, but none in 1810 or 1820. There were listings of Thomas Harrell in the 1810, '20 and '30 census for Gates. Could the missing Elijah have gone to Bertie? Was the Thomas

Ref: the THOMAS HARRELL, d. 1763 EdgecombeCo. he must have been fairly young because : "Wife: Rebecca Skinner, late widow of Thomas Harrell appt'd gdn. to Simon, Edmund & Celia Harrell, orphans of Thomas. Orphan Elva Harrell chose Jonathon Skinner as guardian, Apr., 1764." Itappears that REBECCA had married Jonathon Skinner by 1764 Ex.: Wm. Bryant & Jonathon Cane. Proved by Thomas Belcher Lee, I know you must have this will but will include it for anyone who may not.: Will of Edward Harrell 17
19. [HARRELL] Interpting DNA Matches: [1]
To those who are still confused with the Harrell DNA Project Results: A simple explanation might be to say: "If you have taken a 12 marker test, the results when compared to others may be inconclusive, because the first 12 markers in most lines are very close. If you compare 25 markers and find a perfect match, you have greater assurance that your participant is of the same line, however, this is not to say that both participants are very close cousins. It means that within recent time both of the part
20. [HARRELL] Samuel Franklin Harrell [1]
Sue, I seem to have hit a nerve with my response. I made a stupid mistake by my reference to William and Reuben who are generally believed to be brothers. Some how that came out as ancestor rather than brother. I had just returned from having a rather painfull tooth extraction, so I will blame my dentist for my blunder. Somehow everyone seems to have missed the point by focusing on the relation between William and Reuben which was certainly not my intent. One of my Hurst cousins located the ob
21. [HARRELL] Need Housand Harrell Descendants: [1]
To All: We are still in great need of a direct male descendant of Housand Harrill to participate in the Harrell DNA Project.. We have two Harrell lines who were located on New River between 1775 and the present whose DNA does not match. If we can obtain a DNA sample from a descendant of Housand Harroll, Harrill, we believe there may be a match with one of these Harrell lines.. If you know of a descendant of Housand Harrill of Bedford co., VA and Rutherford co., NC, please let me know. Thanks a Bunch!! G

23. Re: [HARRELL] Samuel and an Eureka experience [1]
I realize that this post is a Colonial times study, but since our Decatur County, GA Harrell is a match with Don and Harrell line 1, I thought I'd mention that there's a Dempsey Harrell in Decatur County in 1830 and 1840. (Ancestry has him as Dmpsy Harriel in 1830 and Dempsey Harrell in 1840.) I don't know how that Dempsey connects to the son of Thomas the Younger, only that he does. The Harrells pioneered in Decatur County, coming down from Pulaski County, GA in the 1820's. They were Primitive Baptist, a
